Our upbringing and its impact on our adult lives

There are so many factors that affect how our lives turn out, but one of the most interesting is how our backgrounds give us unique strengths and perspectives that affect who we are as adults. We asked rising stars from the community to tell us about their background and upbringing and how they feel it’s impacted who they are today.

I am a Colorado Native and my family has lived in this state since the 1970s, I grew up in a suburb just outside of Denver. Growing up there, it was very much a small rural town surrounded by farmland, and in present day is more of a developed suburb surrounded by golf courses and equestrian centers. James: I’m from northern New Jersey, where I grew up with a love of the outdoors. My family prioritized spending time outside, whether it was playing sports, hiking, or packing up the car for a camping trip. These experiences instilled a deep appreciation for nature and staying active. Read more>>

I love capturing candid, real-life moments, those fleeting instants of laughter, joy, and quiet connection. I want my photos to be a reflection of who you truly are, not just posed or perfect, but real and beautiful in their authenticity. I grew up in the Boulder Colorado area, so I also love a beautiful natural backdrop.

My name is Athena and I spent most of my early childhood between Sandy and Boring Oregon. My later teenage years were spent outside of Bend Oregon. It’s considered the high desert of Oregon. Rich in agriculture, farming and outdoor activities. Skiing, hiking, camping, fishing, kayaking and rock climbing are just a few activities you can experience in central Oregon. I have a younger brother who’s a fiction writer, guitar player and disk golf enthusiast. A few cousins that I would consider siblings, whom are also artists. I’m from Kamchatka, a remote region in the Far East of Russia. Growing up there, surrounded by nature’s raw power—volcanoes, geysers, and endless mountains—taught me resilience and adaptability.
