Meet Marissa Hemenway | Colorado Springs REALTOR®

We had the good fortune of connecting with Marissa Hemenway and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marissa, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
When I decided I wanted to work for myself I knew I wanted to specifically work with people that I align with. I seek out working with people that have similar interests and hobbies so that we connect in more ways than just being their real estate agent. When you’re working with a realtor, whether you’re buying or selling, it can be very stressful and you end up spending a lot of time together. Oftentimes you may find yourself having difficult conversations, so knowing you’re working with someone that you connect with makes it easier to get through that and know it’s rooted in trust. I run my business with a focus on being friends first and allowing the professional relationship to fall around that. This has allowed me to build a business in less than 4 years that is entirely built on referrals and continues to grow year over year!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I always joke that everyone and their mom is a real estate agent, because my mom actually was one too! This is a very over-saturated market that can feel so daunting to jump into. You can either look at it from the point of view of, “Why would they choose me?” or, “They’d be silly not to choose me!” To lean on the latter you have to be able to take care of your clients. I do this by always being 2 steps ahead and anticipating questions they may have or what they may need. Starting a career in real estate is not easy. In fact, according to the National Association of Realtors, 75% of realtors quit within the first year and 87% quit within five years. By doing right by my clients, creating genuine connections, and knowing how to handle tough situations professionally I’ve been able to overcome the biggest challenge: starting and creating a successful real estate career.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A week long itinerary! Okay, I’d start by hosting them for a cozy dinner at my house so they can settle in, and I can show off my home!
Day 2 – We would grab coffee at Third Space then head to Garden of the Gods first thing in the morning. We’d hike, explore, take pictures, before heading to eat lunch in Old Colorado City. We’d park in my office parking lot (perk of the job) then walk to Mother Muff’s. After lunch we’d go in and out of stores, before heading back home to relax for the evening.
Day 3 I’d take them to Red Rock Canyon Open Space and not give them any heads up before they saw the best part of the hike (if you know, you know). After, I’d want to head to downtown to explore the cute shops there, Mountain Standard Goods being my favorite, then grab a drink for happy hour at Dos Dos. I’d order the nachos to start because they’re the best!
Day 4 – We would head to Monarch Mountain to go snowboarding, ending their trip with my absolute favorite thing to do! We’d get their at opening, pack our lunches, spend a full day playing in the snow and enjoying the beautiful views.
Day 5 – Pump them full of electrolytes, relax, go for a walk around Palmer Park, and if it’s hockey season, definitely go to a game.
That’s my perfect itinerary! Lots of hiking, playing outside, good coffee, beautiful views, and sharing my wonderful city with people I love.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As cliche as it may sound I really have to shout out my husband. Going from a salaried with bonuses position to only commission was a scary leap, but he believed in me from the very second I shared with him what I wanted to do. We sat together, made a financial plan, set goals, and made it happen. I would have never had the courage without his strong belief in me. He’s my sounding board, my planner, my biggest cheerleader, and my safest space.
