We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Morgan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
It is a great honor to be part of the most special day of someone’s life, and a joy to be able to capture the moments that mean the most to them. This honor is what drives me to do well in my business, which brings me to the most important factor behind my success: constantly trying to become the best that I can be in this industry. I found that when I took as little as 10-15 minutes per day to improve my website or watch YouTube videos on lighting/posing/business improvement, I would book more. Maintaining a consistent style and charging what you’re worth (many of us entrepreneurs undercharge!) also contribute to a successful business.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I never thought I would have the option to shoot weddings full time. I am proud of building a business while being in school and working another job (I am an ER nurse); proud of my ability to create work that I love and that my clients love; proud of the options I am giving myself for the future. For me, the challenges of being a wedding photographer are also the joys – critiquing my work and actively improving it to be the best that I can be, staying up to date with social media, keeping my website and galleries current, and communicating with my clients. I want the world to know that my heart and soul goes into my work so that my clients can look up at their photo wall and feel the joy they felt in that moment.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would head up to the mountains and spend a few days backpacking through the quiet, secluded beauty of the peaks – perhaps in the Mount of the Holy Cross Wilderness. We would check out the little mountain town coffee shops, perhaps hike a 14er or two. While the city can be fun, I believe the true beauty of Colorado is found in its stunning nature!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To my parents for instilling in me the knowledge that hard work pays off. To the photographers who took me under their wing to teach me about business – Jessica Shae Photography in particular. To my amazing, fun and talented assistants – Leandra, Katy, Katherine and Rebecca. To my friends and family for their full support in this crazy venture!
