We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber & John Prom and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amber & John, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Honestly, for us, it is having a balance in skills in the two owners. You have to be a jack of all trades when you own a food truck. You have to be a chef, you have to have people skills, you have to know how to manage people and train, you have to know how to estimate how much food you will need for certain events, you need to know how to shop smart and spend the least amount possible on quality food for your menu items, you need to be a mechanic and an electrician, you need to know how to maneuver a huge truck through traffic or pull and park a trailer into a tight spot, you need to know how to utilize social media to your advantage, you need to communicate effectively, market wisely, network your butt off, you need good math and organizational skills to manage your schedule and keep track of all of your income and expenses. You need to understand the requirements to run your business, the permits and inspections and licenses that are required in every jurisdiction you work in. It takes a lot of skills to successfully run a food truck business and we are lucky in that our two owners have a very different set of skills that compliment each other and cover all the bases. Without one or the other, the business would not be flourishing like it is.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
WeChef Kitchen is an Asian Fusion Food Truck that serves unique and delicious eats all across the Colorado Front Range. We have been in operation since 2016 and in that time have participated in events all across the state, including many of Denver’s largest venues like the Colorado Convention Center, Pepsi Center, Red Rocks, and Civic Center Park, Even though there are 1000+ food trucks in the Denver area now, we are proud to say that there is no other truck like us! We create our own menu items that are totally unique to us! We started off in a small trailer, working mainly small gigs like local breweries, neighborhoods, and private events, but over the years we have moved into a large Food Truck and we do some of the State’s largest events, serving tens of thousands of mouths each year. It was not easy getting to where we are today, it took a lot of struggle and learning, but our determination and grit got us through. We do our best to stay flexible and change with the ever evolving landscape and we absolutely love what we do!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh my, Denver has soooo many great places it really depends on what you are into. We of course would recommend hitting a concert at Red Rocks, maybe seeing a comedy show at Comedy Works, taking a stroll down 16th Street Mall or Pearl Street in Boulder. We’d have to hit a bunch of breweries and if there were any large events with food trucks, we’d have to also do that! We would highly recommend Garden of the Gods, Cave of the Winds, The Royal Gorge, and the Sand Dunes. And you can’t come to Colorado and not venture up into the mountains to visit all the adorable mountain towns like Estes Park, Vail, Aspen, Glenwood Springs etc…
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Honestly, we would have to thank the support of all of our friends and family. They have been our number one supporters since the beginning. We try to feed them for free but they refuse. They show up to every event they can, they share our social media posts, they tell everyone they know about us, anytime they hear anyone talking about needing a food truck they insert themselves in the conversation and recommend us. Their word of mouth recommendation of our food truck has gotten us a lot of gigs, and as you know, that kind of love just spreads further and further. So big shoutout to our WeChef friends and family!
