We had the good fortune of connecting with Amelia Macy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amelia, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have raised poultry for over a decade now and a few years ago, I began to brainstorm about how to actually turn my passion into a functioning business while serving the community around me. Angel Releases was born from this desire to marry a hobby, entrepreneurship, and service, everything that excites me rolled into one endeavor. Today, I continue to enjoy every aspect of Angel Releases, from raising my doves to flying them for others. Truly, the best part of managing a business is being able to fulfil these passions about every day.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Angel Releases is a Front Range-based dove release business that specializes in weddings, funerals, and other special events. We want your event to be an incredible experience and we’re proud to offer our doves to make it even more special. Rock doves truly love to fly and genuinely have a good time circling and swooping in the sky, so our releases bring joy to every party involved; you, us, and the doves. We want to keep the love and the good vibes going, so you can know that every dove has the best care and home that any bird could ask for at our loft.

Rock doves have special homing instincts, which allows them to find their way back to where they hatched from miles and miles away. To protect our flock against bird loss, we train our doves by releasing them in increments from our loft, allowing them to explore the area and get their bearings. This ensures that every bird we release at an event has the skills to find their way home every time. This keeps our business perfectly sustainable, without leaving a footprint by releasing domesticated birds into the wild that were never meant to live there. Our training is also humane for the doves themselves, who can make it home to their nests every time.

My flock of white Homing Pigeons, or rock doves, is just as special to me as my large flock of chickens, ducks, and fancy pigeons. The upside to these white beauties is that they are extremely hardy and are able to raise their own young, unlike chicks or ducklings that require lots of attention and care. But that doesn’t mean that these doves aren’t doted upon. In addition to their staple diet of seeds and peas, they also are able to free-range forage in our fields and fly for miles around our loft for exercise and for pure enjoyment.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Fort Collins has the most adorable Old Town, with restaurants, boutiques, and shops. A trip downtown would not be complete without stopping at the Rio Grande for some delicious Tex-Mex enchiladas, Walrus Ice Cream for desert, and then then some shopping at Firehouse Books or Curiosities, an oddities shop. Wherever you go in Old Town, you’re sure to have a good time!

Horsetooth Rock is the other iconic part of Fort Collins. Towering above the west side of town, it makes for an amazing sunrise hike with all of Fort Collins spread out below it.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Angel Releases would not be possible without the help of my family, especially my dad. They’re right there with me every step of the way and I’m so thankful for their support!
