We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy McKelvey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
First let me start by saying that success for me has very little to do with money. Money tends to dominate the conversation anytime business is discussed – and I get that, but it’s such a small part of the story. Feeling in alignment with what you’re trying to achieve each day and enjoying the deep sense of accomplishment that comes from that (no matter how crazy things get) that is success to me. But it’s also about having a vision and seeing it through, especially against all odds. Honestly the toughest day working for myself is so much more satisfying than the very best day working for someone else. The allure of having a fabulous job and financial security is real, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of one’s soul or dreams. There are ways to provide for a family and still have serious hobbies and endeavors on the side that fuel the spirit and possibly even fuel the future. Far too many people ask themselves at the end of a hard workday: is this it? Is this all that I’m ever going to do? And it impacts their energy for life; it impacts their capacity to love, not only themselves, but others. And it hinders their ability to feel a care and connection for this marvelous planet that we live on. As an integrative herbalist and wellness practitioner I pay attention to more than symptoms; I look for what is at the root cause – what’s behind the symptom – and I employ a comprehensive approach to bring the body back into alignment. As strange as it sounds, I do this same thing in life. I can’t help myself. When I worked in-house for others I was constantly looking at how energy gets blocked and how teams become ineffective. Every moment in-house was a teaching moment. If a manager was disliked I’d wonder why. What’s the root cause or how did they get to be this way? I was constantly looking for what worked and what didn’t. And ultimately the question that I pondered daily, at every job I ever had was: how could all of these people enjoy their work more? What would allow people to come in every day happy to work and ready to tackle what they need to and beyond? Was it feeling valued, part of a true team, being challenged, taking risks, having small failures, achieving goals? Was it having more time to be with family? More work life balance? Was it all of the above? The sad truth is there isn’t a lot in our education model that really encourages an individual to get to know one’s self. There’s a heavy focus on memorization rather than true learning and that heavy focus is numbing. But people weren’t built to be numb; we’re sentient beings. If we truly connect to ourselves, we begin to become aware of something incredibly powerful: our personal energy. When we pay attention to our energy we also pay attention to what robs us of that energy and we find ways to activate who we are and how we wish to live in this world. Once that happens we’re better at everything and we enjoy life a great deal more – even the mundane ‘task-oriented’ moments that we all have in our lives. Small tasks can engage us when our energy is healthy and we can find that living is far, far more than just going through the motions. So what does this have to do with my business? Each cell in the body is ‘digesting’ the world around us and what we say, think, feel, eat, do, even who we surround ourselves with, impacts our cellular energy. Cells want to be energized. Cells want to have optimal nourishment. Cells want to rid the body of toxins. Cells want to perform thousands of elaborate, energetic processes on our behalf. I am wildly passionate about cellular health and using plant medicine and integrative healing modalities to bring about energized living. I’m on a mission to get everyone excited about awakening, protecting, and celebrating their cellular health. Sadly I’m not alone when I say that I’ve lost someone I love before their time, or that I’ve witnessed how cold and cruel cancer is when it ravages a whole person. To maintain optimal wellbeing we must advocate for ourselves and for one another. By working with the body to address root causes before they manifest into health issues we can successfully counter so many of the genetic and lifestyle risks that we are susceptible to. Reclaiming one’s health is incredibly empowering. Now more than ever we all need to be healthy and strong. I launched her vital way to inspire others to nurture their health in time-honored, energizing ways. As an integrative herbalist, natural products consultant, marketing professional and long-time natural supplement advocate, I want to inspire action by championing the consumer. For over 10 years I’ve helped to foster the organic growth of companies across the supplement, beverage, and skincare spaces and I’ve learned from some of the brightest entrepreneurs in the Natural Channel. But in that time, I’ve also seen an industry that was once unique in its care for the consumer, fall prey to greed and profit before people. her vital way is about genuinely offering time, resources, and knowledge to better the health of our customers. As a people centric brand our decision from the get-go to focus on those in need who are actively looking for how to be healthier and offering extraordinary customer ‘care’ service has been at the heart of our success. Very early on we saw that our vision of putting the customer first was resonating and the response was overwhelmingly positive. In a beautiful return on our investment, our customers now do all of the advertising for us. In just 3 years we have become a doctor preferred, Amazon Choice, thriving brand.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Super proud to provide premium supplements of exceptional integrity at affordable prices. We celebrate vitality for every age and we want to inspire others to advocate for their own health and listen to the body. Selling directly to the consumer is immensely satisfying; we bypass the unnecessary markups that occur in the retail space and maintain pricing that allows for the ongoing commitment that supplements require. Our aim is to be the quality leader in purity and potency while nurturing the optimized health goals of our valued community.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Definitely an entire day outdoors hiking along the Flat Iron Trails in Chautauqua Park.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When you start a business it’s definitely all consuming and to have some sort of work life balance you need a team of people who believe in you and who want to help you charge up the mountain each day. I have an incredible circle of supportive friends and a wonderfully eccentric family who keep me sane and focused on what truly matters. But I also have to give a huge shout-out to Guy Raz. His interviews with founders have helped me to embrace risk and to really go for it. I think I’ve heard every episode of How I Built This and now I’m enjoying his book. What a generous human being and storyteller; a gift to inspiring entrepreneurs everywhere.
