We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Dunn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
We have always wanted to work for ourselves since we were kids. Our Dad has owned his own successful business for almost 40 years, and growing up that was the example we had. Cut to us as adults, and we found ourselves following complimentary career paths in the fashion and retail industry. We decided to team up and pull our unique talents together to start our online shop- The Sister Market. We knew from watching our Dad growing up that starting your own business requires lots of long days/nights and hard work. But the flexibility of being your own boss and creating your own schedule is enticing. And doing something you love that you created from the gound up is very rewarding.

What should our readers know about your business?
Inspired by our shared love of fashion, design, entertaining, and travel, we launched The Sister Market in November 2018. The Sister Market is an online marketplace with hand-selected apparel, jewelry, gift boxes, beauty, wellness, and homeware carefully curated by us. We were born and raised in Texas, then lived in New York City for 10 years before recently relocating to Denver, CO.

We are most proud of what we have built together as sisters and are thankful that we get to work together every day. We are also very proud that so many of our customers are repeat customers. We love that we have created an online experience that people want to return back to again and again. We have grown to where we are today with a lot of help. Growing a small business is not easy and we are thankful for all of the people who have helped us along the way. We’ve had to learn to pivot in real-time when our customers are not responding as we anticipated.

Like a lot of small businesses, it is just the two of us running the day-to-day. That obviously has its challenges as you cannot be experts in everything. We definitely have had to learn (or Google) as we go.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We are still pretty new to Denver so we still have a long list of places we want to check out ourselves, but we have discovered some favorite spots during our short time here. We love heading to Red Rocks for a quick hike. We’re coffee addicts and have tried tons of local coffee shops. A few favorites are Sonder, Little Owl, and Huckleberry Roasters. For food we love Postino, My Neighbor Felix, City O’ City, and Potager.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our parents have both been instrumental in our success. From advice and guidance to financial assistance, to physically helping organize inventory and pack orders, they have been with us every step of the way.
