We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Shafer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, what is the most important factor behind your success?
It’s important for me to know exactly why I do what I do, and that allows me to focus all of my energy into my art, which fuels my success. I create because I feel my heart and soul move through my creations, and to get to share that over and over every day with the people I tattoo feeds my desires to keep going and to be better and better every day.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is a reflection of the divine union that lives within us all. There’s a beautiful balance of femininity, flow and masculinity, structure that holds the space together. The more I surrender to the Love that wants to exist through me, the more magical experiences I get to have in my life, and the more my art and career finds success and uniqueness. I’ve been tattooing for twelve years and the journey that got me to where I am now has been filled with lessons and blessings. I’ve learned to focus my mind and energy into my own life, my own creativity and my own work. I’ve learned how to focus my attention and how to use my breath to create a flow in my work that doesn’t drain me or put me in a negative state. When I started a meditation and yoga practice I began to learn how to use my energy in ways that could really create a genuine space for people to come be a part of, that fulfills me and nourishes me. The harder lessons have been to stay on my own path, and not to worry or try to compete with others, because there is so much energy in our world that if we focus on our own self with integrity, life gives us everything we desire and need. The more I open myself to sharing my love and creativity no strings attached, the more abundance I receive, and more interesting and aligned people come to sit in my chair. Tattooing and creating art have been a blessing for me to really know who I am at my core, what I am capable of brining to life, not only in my art but through the experiences I have tattooing people and painting in front of people. I am here to be an anchor for genuine love to exist in our world, and I am beyond grateful to share this love through my art, my career and everything in between.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d like to spend every second of every day outdoors, so when I have the time I go out to the mountains. Boulder has some beautiful hiking spots that you can do in a morning or afternoon. Rocky Mountain Ntl Park is incredible, especially in the fall when the aspens are changing. Driving out towards Vail is beautiful with all the aspens too! Vail has some beautiful hikes. Driving on the 70 through the canyon out to glenwood springs is also one of my favorites, and there’s a bike trail you can ride through the canyon along the river. I like museums too, there’s a cool selfie museum in town now that’s really fun if you’re into photography. Taking a bike ride through the city is always fun too, going from park to park and hitting a spot or two for coffee and lunch along the way.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to share my love and thanks to the mentors and artists I’ve worked with in the last 12 years, the artists at Sacred Heart Tattoo and Olde School Tattoo back in Georgia, the shop I work at now, Certified Tattoo and the artists I work with that share so much love and support and cheer me on, and the team that keeps everything organized and moving at Certified, the owner of Certified, Nando, that’s always creating new ways to move us all forward and upward, the friends I’ve worked with here in Denver that have taught me how to focus my energy into myself and to keep my head up, my family that has always loved and supported whatever I did, and my homies back home that have been by my side through all kinds of ups and downs and moving across the country, I love you all truly and deeply!
