We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Thigpen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, how do you think about risk?
I used to be an avid non-risk taker when it came to my passions. I always had a fear of “what will my passions turn into if I give it the same intention as any other career?” For some reason, the thought terrified me. As I’ve gotten older, I realized the risk and associated fear were what would allow my passions to grow in directions I couldn’t imagine. I had to stop putting limits on myself for what I felt I “deserved” when it came to accomplishments and achievements. I am allowed to dream big and the only one who was preventing it was myself. Now, I welcome the fear with open arms. I know my efforts will make the best path for me and my children. And I will also be showing my children that it is possible to create a life based off passions instead of the typical “box” we’re told to be in.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Photography is something thats became a part of my life when I joined the Navy (and subsequently married a service member). I had the opportunity to live in different places with my favorite being 3 years in Japan. I was forced to slow down and truly appreciate the world around me. I carried my camera everywhere! Not only that, it was a chance to have lots of intentional practice in a beautiful place. We moved to CO after Japan. Another great place to photograph.
On the other side of things, moves in the military always come with their own challenges. I have never lived on this side of the country so trying to find my community (that wasnt military related) was stressful haha! Thankfully, I have been able to meet some of the most talented, ambitious, and kind people.
My brand used to be called Joy Transformed. It represented the different changes that occurred in my life and finding the ways I found joy despite what was happening. Eventually, I decided to not be scared anymore and start putting myself out there. It’s been a good journey thus far.
I want. people to know you never know what a person is going through. so keep it simple, and just be nice. 🙂

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, Im thankful to God for the direction my photography has gone in. My family and friends have been the biggest help (especially when it came to being part of the village for my kids). Coming from a. military family, I am thankful that Ive found people who are genuinely there for one another.
