We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Ward and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always been creative and recognized the literal need for beauty in my life. I was an in-house graphic designer for years and loved working with people who didn’t see the vision and bringing that to life. What a fun way to draw other people’s thoughts and ideas out and into the world. I started photography 13 years ago when my first daughter was born and realized what a gift these photographic memories could be to my clients. My parents died and our photos of them are obviously priceless and treasured. So I always think to capture my clients spark, their souls, their joy so that there is a record of it. You just never know what life will bring so having a snapshot of a lovely moment is worth more than words and memories.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve learned to value my work and savor it, when I book too much I start to feel like a photo factory and that isn’t creative for me. I have to start each session like its a whole new challenge and learn my clients so get those genuine smiles and giggles so the photos are authentic! Keeping a good hold of what I can personally handle and still stay fresh and creative helps me achieve genuine photos. I hope that is what sets me apart, achieving a real feeling from a photo and using natural light in a beautiful way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Great food and being outdoors all weekend! Brunch at Denver Biscuit Company with a cinnamon roll because it’s huge, unique and amazingly delicious. I love to take out-of-towners on a hike up St Mary’s Glacier, the drive up from Golden is beautiful and the hike hits all the gorgeousness that is Colorado; rocky peaks, snowy glacier, endless pine forests, glistening lake and gnarly old trees. Family friendly fun is our favorite so we try and do as much as we can outdoors for healthy outings. We might hit Carter Lake on the boat and enjoy the stunning tree wrapped water – anything that is uniquely Colorado is fun to show out-of-towners.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have an incredible group of clients some that have been with me since I was trying to learn my camera and I couldn’t have gotten to the level I am today without them. Shoots in the rain, blinding sun, beautiful sunsets and sometimes even sunrise shoots to learn how light works and how to capture these sweet souls is how I learned everything!
