We had the good fortune of connecting with Benjamin Higgins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Benjamin, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to do something that challenged me. I wanted to do something that pushed the limits of what I was doing before. With this in mind I thought starting a business that committed to giving 100% of profits to nonprofits was not only radical but worth doing. We went into it without a full strategic plan but we believed that with the right message and product we could build something valuable.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
First, it is never easy. Our pains and struggles have been the guiding force of teaching for our team. At Generous International (best known as Generous Coffee Co) we sell products that are of the highest quality and donate 100% of our profits to nonprofits. As a for profit business this seems wild and extreme and that is exactly what we want peoples reactions to be. We want people to buy Generous who believe that the world can be a better place when business is used for good. We like to say at Generous “you are going to drink coffee anyways…why not make it life changing coffee?”
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would first take them to the mountains. The Rocky Mountains are majestic and unique. Once you lay your eyes on them you understand why they are so visited and enjoyed. I would then take them to a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Red Rocks is still one of the places where I feel like music meets the soul with a warm hug. Next I would take them to eat at either Ash Kara or Mister Oso in Denver. Ash Kara is in North Denver and Mister Oso is in Rhino. Both places have a special place in my heart and I have yet to meet anyone who goes to one of them and isnt satisfied! Finally I would take them golfing somewhere in Denver…because I love golf and I hope they would also!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The co-founders in Generous Riley and Drew along with our legal council Cole. Also, our first employee Maddie who sat throught he growing pains of Generous and our current CEO who has helped launch Generous into a whole new world of possibility Tyler.
