We had the good fortune of connecting with Blankslate and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Blankslate, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“The universe is shaped exactly like the earth; if you go straight long enough you’ll end up where you were.” -Modest Mouse To us, this quote is about getting stuck in a rut and not knowing how to get yourself out. Sometimes you just have to go in a completely different direction, and we were each kind of in that spot before transferring to DU and starting Blankslate.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In fall of 2018, the three of us moved to Denver seeking out a new life. We are very proud of our debut EP, {thursday}, which came out on November 20, 2020. We miss playing in front of people and are excited to get back to playing eventually and are planning on recording more music in the near future. We recently shot a music video for our song “Whale Bones” with our dear friends Alex Williams and Lauren Shults! We are planning to release the video on Jan. 29! The three of us met in September 2018 when we all transferred to the University of Denver from different colleges around the US. We were three of 40 transfer students living in the Transfer Living Community, which is an old frat house that is now a residential option for transfer students. When our drummer, Tess, discovered that Ryan, our guitarist, had a single bedroom with a little extra space, she asked him if she could store her drums there. Tess and Ryan started to jam together and eventually Emma joined in as a vocalist. We all moved into a storage closet in the basement, stacked several large amps cramped into the tiny space, decorated the walls with tapestries and string lights, and wrote the sounds that would become our first EP!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Without question, the mountains are a must. We always go with our friends and family on a hike, maybe to Lookout Mountain in Golden, or if we’re feeling adventurous, we try one of the 14ers (our favorite is Quandry’s). Other local favorites of ours are La Belle Rosette coffee shop, Kaladi Coffee, Birdcall, Lucille’s, Ivy On 9th, and one of our favorite dispensaries; Verde!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to Pam at Pamnation for her ongoing support of the band and for birthing our drummer. Shoutout to Alex Williams, blankslate’s talented photographer and most dependable friend. Shoutout to Tyler at Daymoon Studios, our skilled producer who helps us record our songs and shape our sound.
