We had the good fortune of connecting with Bonnie Dimmick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bonnie, what’s the most important think you’ve done for your children?
As a mom of two young daughters, the most important thing I have done to positively impact them is educating myself on respectful and positive parenting philosophies. This has helped me to fully allow my girls to develop and become their authentic selves — secure, confident, competent and internally motivated individuals. Learning how to truly trust them to lead their own learning and development has been a joy for me to watch as they grow and learn at their own pace. They are so filled with pride and accomplishment when they work to complete a task or master milestones on their own. With our youngest this looked like not helping her learn to walk and letting her do it completely at her own pace. No hand holding while she took steps that she wasn’t quite ready to do on her own. After months of cruising around on furniture and anything else she could find, she took her first unassisted steps. The look of pure delight and sense of achievement on her face was well worth the wait. For our oldest it is working on ourselves and sitting with our own discomfort while allowing her to feel her big feelings and supporting her on the way. And at 3 years old, there are a lot of big feelings!
What should our readers know about your business?
There are lots of different sleep consultants out there, each with our own philosophies and approaches. My approach with Sleep Love and Happiness is rooted in sleep science and respectful parenting philosophies that nurture the parent-child bond and foster independent sleep through trust, emotional connection, and strong relationships. My first daughter is the reason I started this business. We dealt with challenging sleep issues with her and found a solution to get her sleeping better. I was a more confident, patient and supportive mom for her and I could see the benefit for both of us getting better sleep. I felt called to share with other parents struggling with sleep. Then the birth of my second daughter changed my business and methodologies significantly. She was a very different baby than my first and required some more out of the box thinking and different approaches to parenting and sleep. She is the inspiration for the work I do today. My continued professional development and training through RIE and the Child Sleep Institute on attachment theory, regulation theories, temperament and child development have allowed me to develop the respectful and responsive approach to sleep that I share with clients today. I take a holistic approach looking at every aspect of the day and optimizing day time activities and interactions to set each family up for sleep success. It really isn’t just about the time our children are asleep or the time that we want them to be asleep that matters. Helping parents instill a love for sleep in their children is a huge part of what I help families with. This love for sleep helps keep everyone sleeping well for years to come and helps families be healthy and happy. I absolutely love supporting families on the path to better sleep. Helping parents go from walking zombies who feel like they are barely functioning to well-rested parents who feel like they can be the parents they want to be is such an honor.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In the summer, we would definitely be heading up to Red Rocks to enjoy the views, to Coors Field to watch the Rockies and then enjoy some brewery hopping and the nice weather on the patios while sipping some delicious craft beer. Visiting Chatfield state park and doing some paddleboarding at the no-wake lake would definitely be on the list too. In the winter, we’d be heading up to the hot springs and then Breckenridge for some skiing and fun!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am so grateful to all the friends and family who have supported me along the way as I have built my business and supported families around the world. I have to give a huge shoutout to my wonderful and supportive husband. He has supported me every step of the way through in my business, especially as I am juggling being home with my two daughters and working our work schedules around each other. Of course, the biggest shout out goes out to my two daughters. Without them Sleep Love and Happiness Sleep Consulting would not exist and would not have evolved into what it is today.
