We had the good fortune of connecting with Branwen Cole and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Branwen, what are you inspired by?
I’m truly inspired by others. I believe it is so important to surround yourself with positive people who inspire you and bring out your best qualities.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I make personalized interior signs for your home or business. I approach each piece as a single piece of art, rather than something I can mass produce. When I work on a piece, I embrace the imperfections of the wood rather than seeking uniformity, and I think that’s what makes each piece unique and special. I specialize in living art and love incorporating live or artificial plants in my work. One of my favorite pieces was a sign for Fairway Independent Mortgage Company-Pikes Peak Group, where I got to think outside the box and create a very unique piece for them, while still staying true to their national logo.

Building ‘On The Wall Design’ has definitely been a journey. While I’m excited to be where I am now this was not my first business venture. As an Air Force wife I have made several moves over the last 10 years, which brings it’s own set of obstacles. Then came the wonderful experience of motherhood and all the challenges it brings with it. I’ve experienced great joy and great disappointment in business partnership, however, I think if you are going to embark on the journey to start a business you need to understand that you very well might fail. I believe that failure is part of success and that experiencing failure makes you stronger.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
You step out of your door in Colorado Springs and from almost anywhere you have a view of Pikes Peak. So beautiful and majestic, it inspired the writing of “America the Beautiful” by Katharine Lee Bates. So my first stop would be to take you on a hike. Most likely to Garden of the Gods where the views of Pikes Peak in the backdrop are magnificent. I’m very passionate about supporting local businesses so our next stop would be to Manitou and Old Colorado City. They are perfect for strolling the streets and shops and really take in the local atmosphere. For lunch we’d wind our way up Hwy. 24 to Wines of Colorado. There, we’d sit on the patio overlooking the creek sipping wine, while enjoying their delicious food. I love collaboration and one of the best examples of business collaboration in this town is COATI Uprise downtown. This would be the perfect evening out and a fantastic spot that allows you to relax, eat & drink all in one spot.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of The Success Collective! This group of woman entrepreneurs have been my rock. They provide me with support and encouragement every step of the way. We mentor each other, educate each other, laugh and cry with each other and when needed pick each other up. As a business owner there are many times you just need someone to take your hand and guide you in the right direction.
