We had the good fortune of connecting with Brett Donelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brett, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I have become much more comfortable understanding that when you create something the work is never done. You never “get there” and you are always advancing the organization’s mission. The moment you try to get everything done and get things perfect, it stalls the whole process. I have simply learned to have more balance in not having things perfect.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Up until about a year ago, I never thought of myself as a professional, and I still struggle with that term. I thought of myself as a bit of a hack trying to fake my way through the process. But as highly professional people were hired to work in our organization and we continued to have success, I have become more comfortable in that wording. As I have said to some of the other questions, I started spending time with people that were much smarter and more experienced than me. In five years, you usually end up becoming the people you hang out with. I luckily chose very wisely and that has made more of a difference than anything else. I have learned to be more generous with my time and support of our team. When you can go into every challenging situation and truly believe that the other person is coming from the best place possible, you often get amazing results. This approach takes time to understand and listen. But that makes all the difference in people’s performance and the ability to thrive as an organization.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We can’t give away all the secrets. 🙂 But it usually involves running or riding amazing trails and finishing with Rocky Mountain Taco. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would acknowledge two things here. First, I believe that our team is truly the best team out there. We have attracted highly talented and amazing people who thrive in their roles. Also my mindfulness coach has also helped create and mold every large decision the organization has ever made. She is truly someone that has developed my ability to expand and grow the organization.
