We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany F Griggs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany F, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Growing up in a home with a father who was an artist inspired me to pursue a creative path. After high school I got my first job, and quickly realized that the idea of working to retire was something I wanted to run as far away as possible from. Around the time I was 21, I decided I would devote all of my free time to painting.
Pursuing an artistic career takes a lot of courage. I had been told multiple times when growing up that one can not make money by being an artist. I remember having the realization that if someone out there was doing it, who was to say that I couldn’t do it?
Having courage and staying committed to what I felt was my life’s purpose, has been the most important factor behind my success as an artist. My father once said if you wish to become a master at something, you must practice your skill each and every day – this has been another part of my success story.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is a combination of abstraction and expressionism – at heart, I am a colorist. I find myself feeling deeply for people and places around me. Painting has become my greatest tool for self expression. I am most excited about the future unfolding. The more life experiences I have, the more my ‘style’ shifts and changes. As I continue to grow, my artwork reflects this growth.
I feel what sets me apart from others is my ability to capture emotion and express it through color, shape and line. I have often been told by viewers that my artwork makes them feel a certain way. I have also been told that my artwork stimulates other senses – taste and touch.
Getting to where I am today has not been an easy path. I have spent the majority of the past ten years making just enough money to “get by”. There have been numerous times when I have questioned what I was doing. I have considered throwing my dream out the window to settle for a 40 hr gig that would enable me to buy the things I felt I needed.
I overcame these challenges by living a very simple lifestyle. Along this path of becoming a “full-time artist”, I have found that my peace comes from the ability to be free from attachment to the material world. The freedom to wake up everyday and do what lights my soul on fire has helped me to overcome any and all challenges that arise.
Along the way I have learned that pursuing the dream comes first. If the dream doesn’t work out, then I know I can always settle for the 40 hr gig.
I would like the world to know that I am inspired to inspire. I hope other’s look at what I am doing, and know that we are not all that different – they too can manifest their wildest dreams.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was coming to visit, I would take them to the great outdoors. We would hike to the continental divide and stop along the way to appreciate the beauty of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. After, we would stop at Crosscuts in Nederland for their delicious artisan wood fired pizza.
It would then be fun to venture down into the city where I would walk them around the RiNo District.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to make a shoutout first to my family. I have had endless support from those who love me, and this has helped me to find confidence in my work.
Knotted Root Brewery is another shoutout of mine! Chris Marchio had the vision of putting my art on their cans long before their first can release. The support and recognition I have received through KRB has been a life changing experience for me as an artist.
