We had the good fortune of connecting with Brook Ferguson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brook, how do you think about risk?
My decision to follow my dream to become a professional musician was already a gigantic risk. So everything that came after was aligned with that risk tolerance. Taking this chance made me work harder than I ever thought possible. And in the end, I was able to score a Principal Flute position with the CO Symphony as well as with the ROCO (River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, Houston, TX). I am also the flute professor at Utah State University. All of these positions call upon a different skill set and I enjoy them all because of those contrasts. SEE! Highly employed! I could have never imagined it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a musician who is open-minded and interested in all genres and cultures. Intellectual curiosity has been the driving force behind my development as an artist. In January of 2022 I will perform as a soloist with the CO Symphony on Mozart’s Flute Concerto in G major, KV 313. I hope the community will come check it out!
Becoming a professional musician was arduous and time-consuming. But I could not see myself having done anything differently. There was never a “Plan B”.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spot in the city is Boettcher Concert Hall- home of the CO Symphony. I would give my bestie tickets to see the symphony. I would also hit up the Clyfford Still Museum because of its unique position in the global art Canon. It is truly remarkable that Denver holds such a treasure. I would go to see the Rockies or any one of our world-class teams. And we would swing by Dazzle to hear live jazz! Friends of Chamber Music presents concerts at the University of Denver. These are among some of the best concerts one can attend. I would highly recommend all of these options. Sushi at Sushi Den or Izakaya Den would be the cherry on top.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The amount of effort and energy that goes into training a musician is extensive. All of my private instructors were absolutely critical for my development and they continue to mentor and support me to this day: Jeanne Baxtresser, Alberto Almarza, Marina Piccinini and the late Doriot Anthony Dwyer. Also, the New World Symphony helped me bridge the gap between being a student and becoming a full-time principal player in a major orchestra. The mentorship of Michael Tilson Thomas was of particular significance to me personally and musically.
