Meet Carina Bañuelos-Harrison | Photographer and Art Curator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Carina Bañuelos-Harrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carina, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“The purpose of education is to create in a person the ability to look at the world for himself, to make his own decisions.”, James Baldwin. This quote resonates with me, it reminds me of the things I have learned while working as an artist and curator. I try my best to learn new art mediums rather than just sticking only to photography. At times it can be intimidating to learn something new but it’s also gratifying, and I walk away with a different perspective. I also get to learn something new about myself. 

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am Founder, Curator and Photographer for Art and Color. Most importantly, I am an advocate for artists that are part of historically marginalized communities, helping artists exhibit their work in art spaces and other locations is a personal passion and commitment for her. I bring the lens of intersectionality and equity, because my own experience and involvement in the art world observed that this component is/has been missing. I also bring my knowledge as an artist, art educator and art administrator.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It would be arts related as well as outdoors. Red Rocks Amphitheater is at the top of the itinerary list followed by galleries, museums, local shops and historic restaurants in the Santa Fe Arts District. There is so much Latinx history on Santa Fe as well interesting exhibits that happen on First Fridays. The Denver Botanic Gardens is another must see. There is no other place you can view beautiful plants, flowers and art.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Education, hard work and doing what makes you happy was key growing up in a Latinx family with three sisters. That is what gave me the drive to be an artist, art curator and advocate for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) art community. I feel so lucky to have the support of my Latinx Art Community, mom, siblings and now my own family which includes my two children and husband. I want my children to know that they can find a job that they can enjoy and love.
