Meet Catherine Flanagan | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Catherine Flanagan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Catherine, what’s the most important think you’ve done for your children?
I am a working single mother of three children, that fact alone creates the impact that I hope to have on my children. Having a strong work ethic is something I want to instill in my kids, knowing that nothing gets handed to you and that your goals will be achievable with the right amount of effort. I moved to America with nothing but dreams of what the movies portrayed, I got married with the white picket fence in mind, I became a mother believing my English nanny roots would make that job easy, none of those were a reality, but what was a reality is the fact that working hard has never left me without a place to live, without the being able to get through tough times emotionally and becoming a mother has taught me your work never stops, so you better love what you do.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started out with undeserved confidence, its how I have always faced any task in life, believe you can and you will. Photography at the start was a way to make money, but my stubborn belief that you still have to be the best you can at making that money drove me into striving to learn more about the craft. I love that moment you get the real smile, that point when you know your joke brought them out of being uncomfortable, and the biggest compliment of all after a shoot, “i actually enjoyed that and I hate getting my picture taken” I think what sets me apart is I work just as hard on a relationship in the moment as I do what I want to achieve. I learned that my accent and dry sense of humor is an excellent distraction, throwing people off their discomfort, allows me to make them forget their perceived flaws and helps me show them what I see in them.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Denver in this time still holds a huge array of things to go out and “adventure”, I would say going on a hike like at Roxborough State Park to explore the great outdoors it has to offer and then grabbing some food to have a picnic at the Denver Botanic Gardens would be on my list of things to do. I also enjoy wondering down 16th street mall and taking in the architecture of downtown.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Photography never came easy to me, I had to learn and relearn so much, my clients have always been my champions, they allow me to keep going and make sure I want to keep doing better. My children are the reason I make sure I live my dream so they know its possible to live theirs.
