We had the good fortune of connecting with Charlie Harding and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Charlie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My brother Mike and I started Let’s Roam because we love getting out and exploring cities together, and there really was no other activity that allowed us to see landmarks in a city, while having fun connecting with friends or family. We created our own scavenger hunt one day in St. Louis as something to do, and realized that we could create hunts in other cities for other people to also enjoy. I have had a very entrepreneurial mindset since I was a kid, and both Mike and I enjoy the technical side of developing the app. We combined these passions and our company was born!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our business has grown to where it is based on our tenacity and ability to move quickly, in addition to building a great team. We do not give up! We are constantly looking for new ways to create activities that let friends and family connect and explore together. We have had to adapt and pivot many times in our journey, but most recently with the pandemic. We were able to launch our Virtual Game Night and Virtual Team Building Platform in less than 2 weeks, which gave companies and individuals a way to connect with colleagues and friends at a time people needed it the most. This platform has been able to help us sustain our growth, while hearing over and over that our platform has brought joy to people during this time. We are small, but mighty! Our team works hard to achieve our mission of helping people explore and connect with friends and family through adventure – we are so proud of our team for being able to stay fully operational with outdoor and in-home scavenger hunts, as well as virtual team building activities.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being in the tour business, making fun city adventures is in my blood, so when a friend visits I know I’ll create a lasting memory. The first thing that I would do is make their arrival over the top (imagine the Queen just arrived) and from there we’ll start our adventure. I like to make exploring a city a game, just like our Let’s Roam app and scavenger hunts. So I might say we have 8 hours to see how many different museums, bars and restaurants we can find; or perhaps, find a hidden local spot by asking locals. Exploring is all about having fun and doing something that you haven’t seen or done before, so as long as we accomplished that I know it would create the best time ever. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
One of the most important books I’ve read that has helped us push towards success is Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh. It’s about how Zappos put customers first to help pave the way for their massive success and how they created a company culture that helped them grow incredibly fast. As soon as I read this book, the gears started turning on how we could improve our business and take it to the next level. We ended up flying out to Las Vegas specifically to visit the Zappos HQ and after meeting with their team we were able to create our 7 core values. This book helped us build to build a business where our employees are top of mind and I believe this eventually led us to win a top slot in Best Places To Work Denver 2020.
