We had the good fortune of connecting with Chase Blackwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chase, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Longmont CO, from a young age I always knew I wanted to be in the mountains. Just by looking at them everyday from the front range I thought how can I spend the most time possible up there. Luckily for me Eldora is only about 50mins from my house so I got to ride there a lot as a kid. Then I just fell in love with progressing at snowboarding to the point of going after a professional career.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One of the things that sets my riding apart is my style and speed that I enjoy riding at. I’m most proud of the projects I’ve done such as the movie Teal, and overcoming fears of learning new tricks. I started competing in snowboarding when I was 7 years old through the USASA Rocky Mountain Series. From there I progressed into Rev tours then World Cups and Finally XGames and World Championships. Along the way I struggled with multiple injuries such as broken bones and concussions, getting sponsors, and homeschooling. Some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way are if you work hard and don’t give up it’ll all work out in the end. In the end if you’re having fun you’re doing it for the right reasons so enjoy the ride!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Dillon CO, Definitely have to hit breakfast at blue moon cafe or sunshine cafe.
Snowboard at Copper mtn during the day, maybe ride the park if it hasn’t snowed or shred some T-bar laps if the the snows good.
After riding we could drop our boards off at Mono Cera to get waxed. Then maybe stop hit Pug Ryan’s or Dillon Dam brewery for a drink. After that we could hit the hot tub for a little bit before dinner. Then either go out somewhere in silverthorne or Breck for dinner. Some of my favorite places are Sauce on the Blue and Tin Plate!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The person that definitely deserves some recognition in my story is my Coach Jim Smith. I would not be the rider or person I am today if I hadn’t liked up with Jim at the age I did.
