Meet Christy Bee | Singer, Lyricist, Song Writer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Christy Bee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christy, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
During the few chapters throughout my life when I wasn’t making music, it felt like something was missing, like I wasn’t my fullest, most authentic self. I also love sharing my story and life lessons through music, and I want it to help others through their journey. What also drives me is to inspire others to do what they love, no matter their circumstances or age. It’s never too late to spend time doing what you love to do.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I wrote and recorded my first song on a Fisherprice tape recorder when I was five, and I remember my mom being so proud. A part of me has always felt drawn to music, and as a kid, I used to daydream of being in a group with an acronym for a name like TLC. Then at about 10, I was singing along to a 90’s banger, and someone told me to shut up, so I did. It made me feel like I wasn’t good at singing. But, at 14, I experienced my first heartbreak, and all I could do to cope was to sing along to Fiona Apple’s first couple of albums that were full of the angst and pain I was feeling. Something clicked and I knew I wanted to be a singer, but I didn’t think I was pretty enough to ever make it in an industry so based on looks (especially in the early 2000s). So I put my dream to bed. I would still write poetry, lyrics, and sing a cappella covers for my grandparents, but I was sure I would never pursue my music in any capacity.
Then, in my 20s with some newly found confidence, I tried to find people to collaborate with, but nothing stuck until I started to sing with a burlesque troupe that my friend was a part of. Being on stage felt so right. After my first show with them, I decided no matter what, I would pursue what I love to do, not for any particular outcome but because it made me feel the most alive! I have since been lucky enough to work with some very talented people but something really resonated when Andrew and I started writing songs together (our guitarist/co-writer) and after almost 2 years of writing, rehearsals, and recording we have recently released our first single, have plans to go back in the studio for an album, and we’re playing at Larimar Lounge on July 11th, which has been a dream venue of mine since I moved here in 2019! We have had so many great experiences so far, and we’re just getting started! I feel so happy to have found other devoted musicians who have such amazing passion and work ethic, who also refuse to quit doing what they love!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love when people visit me because it allows me to be a tourist in my own city and go to all of my favorite places!
I LOVE FOOD! Plus, I live in the Berkeley neighborhood, so it’s hard to narrow it down, with Tennyson being a mecca of great restaurants! So I won’t! Haha! Starting with breakfast, we would have to go to Call Your Mother for a bagel sandwich, then Salty’s for a brown butter donut. Lunch, Blackbelly Market, or Odie B’s, and Billy’s Inn for Margaritas, or Forest Room 5 for drinks and the vibe. For dinner, it’s Nana’s Dumplings without a doubt! We would also have to go to Izzio for their stuffed croissants, and Little Man for the best ice cream. Clearly, this is why I’m a thicc gal 🙂
For a soak in my favorite hot springs, Raspberry Springs is almost a religious experience; it’s a quiet, private spring with a sauna, on top of a mountain. For easier scenic hikes, RMNF, or for more of a secluded, challenging one, Rawhide trail in Golden, and of course, we’d have to catch a show at the iconic Red Rocks!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Two incredible women! My mother, no matter what I ever did, she encouraged me to do it with my whole heart. As well as my best friend Alessa. We met one another at a time in our lives when we needed unconditional love and support, and she has given me nothing but that for years. She reminded me that we are limitless, and I am so grateful to have another strong woman in my life, who is genuinely rooting for me to go for everything I want. She is a huge part of why I am who I am and why I’ve never quit.
