Meet Colleen Tully | Visual Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Colleen Tully and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Colleen, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
Many people think being an artist is just about having natural talent, but the truth is—talent is largely a learned skill. What looks like talent is really the result of countless hours of practice, study, and persistence. You’re not just born with it; you build it. Art is a craft that takes discipline, patience, and continual growth. It’s not simply “knowing how to draw”—it’s engaging with a complex and competitive industry that demands both creative and professional commitment.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m an oil painter specializing in contemporary imaginative realism. A unique aspect of my work is repurposing abandoned antique headboards and mirrors as surfaces for my paintings—breathing new life into forgotten objects and turning them into narrative art pieces.
I’m proud of the perseverance I’ve shown in my artistic journey since college. I’m currently a member of Valkarie Gallery in Lakewood and excited to be preparing for my upcoming solo show in June, The Dreaming Hour.
The road hasn’t been easy. I attended college to work alongside inspiring artists and develop my technical skills, and that experience taught me not only how to refine my craft but also the importance of community and collaboration. Networking has been one of the most powerful tools in moving my career forward.
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is that talent isn’t just something you’re born with—it’s something you cultivate. Talent is a learned skill, and mastery comes from hours and hours of dedication. Practice really does make progress. There have been times when I had to choose between paying rent or buying paint—and sometimes, I still do. But it’s worth it. I’d rather be a “starving artist” than live without art in my life.
I want people to know that I don’t just create images—I build visual stories in a language I’ve developed through years of hard work and personal vision. My art is meant to speak to people on an emotional and imaginative level. I’ve poured everything into my craft, and I’ll never stop making art—it’s who I am.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a nature girl at heart, so I’d start the week with a day trip to the mountains or a visit to Garden of the Gods—there’s nothing like those majestic rock formations and crisp mountain air to kick off an adventure.
If my friend is into art, we’d absolutely explore the local gallery scene. There are so many hidden gems around town. I’d also take them on a scenic drive to Trinidad to visit a friend’s gallery—Kuehl Fine Art, located in the historic A.R. Mitchell Museum. I’ve had some amazing times wandering through that space and soaking in the local vibe. Trinidad is quickly becoming a rising art hub, and it’s exciting to see it grow.
The trip would be a mix of nature, art, and soulful conversation—exactly how I like to experience Colorado.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m incredibly grateful for the unwavering support of my family and friends—they’ve always stood by me, even when the path wasn’t clear. I want to thank every mentor and teacher who believed in me and encouraged me to keep going, especially during moments of doubt. I’m also thankful for the many artists and colleagues I’ve worked with along the way—they’ve set powerful examples of dedication and creativity. And of course, I’m deeply appreciative of the galleries that have represented me and my work, helping me share my vision with the world. Every one of these people and communities has played a part in my journey. I thank them from the bottom of my heart for letting me live a dream, even if it is for a brief while.
