We had the good fortune of connecting with David Mayo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think that taking risks is an important part of life because it helps you grow and evolve as a person and in your career. You learn life lessons when you take risks. A big part of taking risks is Risk Management. Its all about identifying, assessing and controlling the risks at hand. Taking risks allows you to experience success when the risk pans out in your favor. It also allows us to experience failure. As you experience success from risks, you gain confidence and you learn what worked in your advantage. Failures in life will help you learn what not to do BUT it also humbles you in a sense that failures will happen in your life/career and that you have to keep moving forward and just try again.
Taking risks have been a huge part of my career as CEO of my company. Most of the risks I had to take involved finances. I regularly have to make big decisions that can potentially make or break my company but its all risk management.
If you have a passion or truly believe in something, don’t be afraid, take the risk.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My company 5280Holistics was founded in 2018 with a focus on athletic health/fitness and sports/injury recovery. We provide premium CBD products to our clients to help them recover fast, naturally and in return improving performance. We love to be immersed in the community by participating in tons of local events, sponsoring local athletes and donating to charities in Colorado. It took a lot of focus to get to where I am today with my company. in 2018 there were heavier restrictions on cannabis based companies. My biggest thing that helped me, besides from a “there’s always a way” mentality, is just asking questions. If you’re friendly with people, you will be surprised how many people will guide you in the right direction or give you what you want if you just ask for it. What’s the worst they can say? No?
That’s the only way I was able to move ahead in my industry. The biggest thing at the time was banking and payment processing. There are still regulations in those sectors for cannabis companies as of now. In 2018 I happened to ask the right person about cannabis banking and they got me linked up with people at Bank of the West. I filled out applications and did interviews and eventually was granted a FDIC bank account for cannabis banking . From there I reached out and just asked the people at Square and they granted me a to demo their CBD payment processing. That opened up all types of new things for me and still to this day, benefit the company.
Biggest lessons would have to be stay focused on your goal and not be afraid of failure, just come back better than before. I also learned a lot about risk management.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would have to take them to Red Rocks if they’ve never seen it. Take them hiking/camping.
Eat/drink through Denver

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Basically just shout out to my fiancé (co-founder), family and my friends that have always supported me and kept my stoke high! Sometimes what you really need is a positive support group.
