We had the good fortune of connecting with Elyse Whitt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Elyse, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Before I started my photography business I was a middle school math teacher. From teaching, I learned good relationships can do wonders for your classroom. The same has applied to photography. I have made great relationships with my first clients. These families have then referred me to other wonderful families, businesses, and schools.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a photographer. I take photos of happy people outside. I started out small with a little ad on Facebook and met some wonderful families from that ad. These families then refer me to their friends, and you know what? Great people are friends with other great people. From these great families and relationships, I added preschool photography. This was something I was totally scared of and told the school I couldn’t do it. Luckily one of my longest clients talked me into it, and I am eternally grateful for her.

The hardest part of getting this business off the ground was putting myself out there. Photography is an art, and having something so personal out there for others to see is scary. As scary as it is for me, the more I put my work out there the more clients are reaching out to me. I have to constantly push myself to do something that scares me. Take on a client that has crazy props, travel to a location I haven’t shot at before, or post photos weekly. Every time I have pushed myself out of my comfort zone I have grown as a photographer and as a person.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We have a lot of friends and family that come to Colorado to visit and we loved to show them around! One of my newest places to show off is Meow Wolf downtown. This was an amazing exhibit and something new our returning guests haven’t seen.

We also love a short drive up to Golden to show them Lookout mountain followed by lunch at Buffalo Rose.

If we have guests in town that have not skied before we highly recommend going to Evergreen to try out Echo Mountain. It has a great bunny hill that is easy to access, amazing views, and super friendly and helpful staff!

Union Station and following that up with an ice stop at Milkbox Ice Creamery. While downtown we love to show off our amazing museum with a special stop at the third-floor lookout in the Denver Nature and Science Museum. If we have time beforehand breakfast at Denver Biscuit Co is always a fav.

A drink at Lady Justice is enjoyed by all. Great staff and a great cause!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband has always believed in me more than I ever have in myself. Five years ago my husband bought me a Sony a 6000 camera as a Christmas gift. At that time I was home with two small boys and constantly questioning what I had done when I “retired” from teaching. I have loved photography since high school but only took fun photos for myself. Jason encouraged me to learn about the camera, photography, and editing. Later he pushed me out the door on my way to my first real photo shoot. Now he is home with the boys full time on the weekends while I travel around beautiful Denver taking photos.
