We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Peters and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risks can feel daunting, yet it’s vital for crafting the life you envision, particularly in the realm of creativity. As the owner of a wedding planning business in Colorado, I revel in the artistry of coordinating cherished celebrations. My career offers a flexible canvas—embracing a fluid schedule, income, and opportunities—both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. Recently, I’ve embraced the significance of taking that first step, a.k.a. the risk. Even small risks, like reaching out to a new venue or proposing a changed color palette, can stir fears of rejection or failure. However, I’ve come to understand that each action carries inherent risk, often hindering progress. While there are risks that may not pan out, I view them as shots on goal—each attempt increasing the likelihood of success. It’s a delicate balance of calculated foresight and fearless initiative, recognizing that some risks harbor nothing but potential for growth and reward, awaiting only our courage to seize them. Which can be the scariest step of them all.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I take pride in the brand I’ve cultivated, one that resonates with clients who align with our vision. Building this brand has had it’s difficulties, and it’s an ongoing process. The real challenge lay in filtering out the external noise and honing in on what truly mattered to my team and I—defining the type of clients we wanted to serve and the brand identity we aimed to establish. I find fulfillment in assisting couples who prefer a hands-on approach to planning, serving as their trusted companion throughout the journey.
Navigating these challenges demanded introspection and dialogue—conversations with industry peers, family, friends, and, most importantly, those clients who embodied the essence of my brand. It was through these exchanges that Heirloom’s identity took shape, rooted in a genuine connection with clients and excitement for celebrating love in their unique way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For a week-long trip with my best friend, we’d start in Dillon, using it as a hub to explore mountain towns like Breckenridge and Vail. After soaking in the mountain scenery, we’d head to Denver for urban exploration. We’d spend a day in RiNo, enjoying street art, breweries, and eclectic dining, then move to South Pearl Street for boutique shopping and local cafes. It’s the perfect blend of outdoor adventure and urban charm, with plenty of delicious food along the way.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband Niko deserves the shoutout. He has provided support, mentorship, love, and encouragement in large doses, always. I’ve been in a phase of taking risks, taking steps that absolutely terrify me, and he is always there to encourage the leap, serving as my safety net. “What if it doesn’t work?” I’ll ask. “Then we will figure it out,” he’ll reply. I cannot express how helpful and important his support has been in my life.
