We had the good fortune of connecting with MIke Muirhead and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi MIke, what role has risk played in your life or career?
There is always a risk/reward analysis that needs to be done alone, with only you determining if the risk is worth it. – like “Is the juice worth the squeeze”? I think that I follow my gut instincts a lot while making decisions that will impact my life and those around me. In my line of work, it’s how this will benefit the community – and the long-term effects. I believe that taking risks in a calculated way will provide you with stronger self-confidence when it comes to making other decisions.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When in the 6th grade, I was elected president of the class. Other class members wanted a pop machine installed in the school for the students to have access to. While we never got the pop machine, I did realize that you could get things done if you had the support of others and if you were willing to serve them in a friendly and open way. While attending High School; I worked part-time at a Chevron gas station where we offered full service (pumping gas, washing windshields, checking tire pressure, etc.) to everyone who came in. We also serviced the city vehicles, so I got to know the employees who worked there. I remember them telling me it was a pleasure to be able to serve the members of the public. My career in the electric utility industry (and City Management) only enhanced this feeling of satisfaction, knowing that they depended on me (and others) to restore power to their homes and businesses after a severe storm and the trust that they placed in me to get the job done. Throughout my career, it has always been hard work, spending many hours away from home and family, giving back to the community, and a lot of luck and prayer that has got me where I am today. A good sense of humor is also needed.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would probably go one of two places – the mountains in Colorado and Wyoming, where we would go trout fishing, watch the moose and elk in the green meadows, cook on an open fire, make breakfast burritos, go hiking and maybe a cold beer when we returned to camp. The second place would be at the beach in Bonaire where they could relax… Sleep in, wear shorts and tee shirts all day – bask in the sunshine, swim in the warm waters, and go snorkeling. See fish of every color, size and type. Eat at restaurants where you have never been, and take a risk and eat something new.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
