We had the good fortune of connecting with Emyli Dahlia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emyli, why did you pursue a creative career?
Initially I pursued an only slightly creative career, focusing on digital marketing and production. I’ve always been artsy and it was nurtured by family and teachers growing up, but I also craved security. As time went on into adulthood things out of my control pushed me away from my career and into music and clothing design. That ball just kept rolling and the positive feedback I received inspired me to keep going with it. I think many artists would agree there’s really nothing better than getting paid for something that already brings you joy. Finding ways to share what I love with other people and give them a positive experience is so satisfying.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Lately I’m mostly focused on music. It hasn’t been easy and isn’t my full-time job by any means. But I get the most satisfaction from writing music and playing it in a set in front of friends and strangers. I’ve had tons of help from other Denver DJ’s helping me learn to mix and giving me opportunities to play out while I was still learning. Recently I’ve had help from others to fine-tune my productions, whether it’s just giving me feedback or actually helping me with mix-downs. Over the last few years of playing out I’ve learned that a little pre-set anxiety is ok. I’ve also learned that I have a lot of support around me, and when I have a new wacky idea for a shirt design or a party, as long as my heart is in it, people see that and are drawn to it. One of my proudest accomplishments in Denver has been a party called Acid Night, where we feature the classic acid house and techno music style in live hardware and DJ sets. I continue to be amazed by the response to these parties and hope I can continue that energy in the future.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love the mountains. I’d take a friend up to Winter Park to go snowboarding or hiking for a couple days. If it’s summer, I’d take them camping and paddle boarding too. I’d of course want to take them to Red Rocks as well. And if they’re into that sort of thing, I’d take them out to a show at Black Box, Mission Ballroom, or any of Denver’s awesome venues, followed by an after-hours rave that I’d (hopefully) be performing at. We would have to stop at City O City for vegan ice cream and lots of coffee first.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shout out to my parents who let me wear costumes to school from a very young age and nurtured my individuality. And to my Denver friends who have supported all my ventures over the years; from helping teach me to DJ to buying my merch and coming to events.
