We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Schmidt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eric, what’s your definition for success?
When Phil and I started Amalgam, our intention was to build a creative outlet, bring people together and make a difference in our community. It was never about the money, but rather developing lasting friendships and having fun experiences. None of this would be possible without the Colorado beer community. We are continually blown away by all the support we’ve received. Over the years we tend to celebrate the charitable initiatives we’ve contributed to over pretty much everything else – this is success in our eyes.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Amalgam is a passion project for both of us. Phil and I work afterhours to continue to push the brand forward and drive innovation. We are not in this to do what has already been done, but rather continue to draw inspiration from food, farming, wine, the beer community, etc. We view Amalgam as an evolving art project which uses beer as the medium. The brand transforms with our interests.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Straight from DIA to Bierstadt Lagerhaus to settle in with some Slow Pour Pils and Helles then over to Goed Zuur for mixed-culture beers and a charcuterie spread, off to Finn’s Manor and probably another quick stop at Bierstadt if they’ll let us back in. Go to bed then head to Steamboat for 4-5 days of snowboarding and relaxing at Strawberry Park Hot Springs, bookending the trip with stops at Westbound & Down and Cannonball Creek Brewing Company.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Small Batch Liquors. Owners Joe & Tami Tumbarello have been supporters from day one. They bought 40 cases of our first bottled beer, which is wild when you consider the size of their shop. This allowed us to sign the lease on what is now our barrel-cellar and tasting room space.
