We had the good fortune of connecting with Erik Seversen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erik, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think taking risks is very important. I try to climb at least one big mountain every year. My last one was Mt. Aconcagua, the highest in South America at 22,841 ft elevation. When I’m feeling the effects of high altitude and am on an incline such that if I slip, there are potentially fatal consequences, I am able to touch a space acute focus where every aspect of my physical and mental abilities are in tune with keeping me alive and getting me to the summit of the mountain or safely back down.

Taking risks in my business is the same thing. If I play it safe on the mountain, I might enjoy being in nature, but I’ll miss the rewards of the view from the top, and I’ll miss seeing how far I can push myself. While I enjoy times of calm and comfort, staying too long in this place is one of the best ways to have a company fail. Taking risks and benefiting from the positive chemicals and hormones that get us into the zone during times of (positive) stress is a great way to keep a company’s brand and profits on an upward trajectory.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My company’s name is Innovative Educational Services, LLC, but my brand is basically Erik Seversen. I got to where I am today by intentionally creating the exact life I wanted to live. Within this, there are three parts. The first is: I want to help make the world a better place by helping others improve their lives through easily accessible mindset tools that transform businesses and individual lives.

While the tasks in building a company might have been work, the process felt easy because I visualized my future and simply aligned my actions to create that future. I allowed my company to evolve into what it is today by allowing the path of success to flow where it needed to. I didn’t resist change. Currently, my company is mostly producing extremely powerful books about success, health, mindset, and performance; public speaking; and creating courses/worships for entities including the United Nations.

I love what I do because my company has taken me all over the world and has allowed me to share what I know with others while continually learning from others as well.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spot in Los Angeles is my home in the South Bay. With a visiting friend, we’d spend a lot of time sitting in my library or back yard drinking endless cups of coffee, tea, or juice. However, I love Los Angeles, so we’d certainly get out. Beaches we’d visit are El Porto, the local surf spot in Manhattan Beach, and Rat Beach near Malaga Cove. We’d also go hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains above Malibu, and we’d have to visit Hollywood for some good music and probably Little Tokyo for some good food.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to two people. First, Peter B. Hammond, PhD, my mentor at UCLA and the person responsible for helping shape who I am today. And, Genein Letford whose books, speaking, and courses on creativity and success are a large influence on who I’m becoming.
