We had the good fortune of connecting with Griff Hanning and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Griff, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Without risk, there is no reward. I take way too many risks. I like taking risks on myself and my
team. I’m not a big fan of betting on the market. I don’t know enough to play that game well. I
like betting on new ways of doing things, on passion, and on hard work. The problem is that new
things don’t always work, passion sometimes dies, and hard work takes an extreme amount of
grit. Turns out humans (including myself) are emotional beings who have ups and downs – not
much different than the stock market – but certainly more rewarding. When my teammates get to
experience a changed life because of the risks we took together, that makes it all worth it.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The people that work here are what make HOMEfix unique. We are constantly on the lookout for “unicorns”— those unicorns are people who have high character & fit our core values, and people who have the skills, experience and ability to deliver high quality work and truly care about serving others. It was not easy getting here, construction is messy and difficult, and it takes a lot of grit to keep going at times. But at the end of the day, I remind myself where we’re going and why we’re doing it, and that is to improve homes and change lives. One of the lessons I learned was that not everyone shares the same values that I do and it’s rare when you find someone that is aligned with you. One of the reasons we seek people with high character is because we are getting permission to go into people’s homes which is a private, intimate space and that demands a lot of trust. We really want to revolutionize the residential construction industry by providing a better way of helping people love the home they live in.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of our favorite hikes is Cutler Trail back behind the Broadmoor area, there is a beautiful view of the city at the top. We also love going to Colorado mountain brewery—my wife and I usually get the Chipotle/Maple Glazed Salmon.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are 2 people I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to — my dad & grandpa. They both had their own painting contractor businesses back in the day, and because of that, I grew up thinking that everyone started their own business when they became an adult. They really helped to give me the confidence to start HOMEfix originally and gave me a lot of advice as well as taught me a lot of the construction and business skills that I have.
