Meet Hannah Henry | Owner & Head Florist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Hannah Henry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hannah, how does your business help the community?
I love flowers. It’s sort of ridiculous at this point. I’ve got them inside the house, a cut flower garden outside, seeds growing under grow lights in the basement, and stems propagating in my kitchen (should I mention that I also crochet flowers?). My poor husband.
For some reason God has put this love of flowers in my heart, and I believe that this gift is not intended for me to keep to myself. This love was given to me to share with the people in my community.
As a florist I have absolutely had the chance to bless others with flowers. I had the best ever bride at my latest wedding at Vermillion Hill in Longmont. She is such a kind and genuine person. It was so much fun to design for her. And then at her wedding she did something so unexpected. She came straight over to me after the ceremony and gave me a big hug because she was so excited about the flowers. I’m telling you it made my whole week! XOXOXO to you Sarah.
But I would say that my favorite thing is to teach those around me. One way I do this is by hosting girls craft nights. A recent gathering involved making dried flower wreaths using flowers that were collected and preserved from last season. Every wreath made was uniquely beautiful!
Another way I share with my community is by helping neighbors and friends plant their gardens and flowerpots. It makes me so happy to embolden others with the confidence and knowledge to grow something beautiful. It is so wonderful to see their gardens in bloom!

What should our readers know about your business?
I’m the owner and head florist of Dragonfly Floral Company. I chose the name Dragonfly because my maiden name is Dragon… and because dragonflies are cool. I’m an event florist specializing in weddings, memorials, corporate events and dinner parties. I also teach workshops in cozy coffee shops and locally owned boutiques.
A new aspect of my business has come from digging in the dirt, both at home and at a local flower farm. I have found that I am happiest when my hands are in the soil and my fingernails are dirty. I love planting seeds. I plant them, I water them, I pray for them, and then I talk to the flowers as they grow. (I might be little nuts). But it is so rewarding to grow a plant and then add its flowers to a bridal bouquet. Does it get any more special? Although I’m just a few seasons into growing cut flowers, I am excited to see how this newfound passion can play a part in the future of Dragonfly.
I am proud of my business, not because I’m the most successful or best at what I do (I’m certainly not), but because I chose to do something hard and brave. I’ve messed up a ton, but I’ve learned even more. I’ve had my weaknesses exposed but found beautiful friends to help make up for my shortcomings. And truly, I would not be able to do this without my husband and my family. I am so fortunate.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a foodie. Actually, I really love well-made desserts. Is there a name for that? A Sweetsie? I’m a Sweetsie. And I’m also a big fan of small business. Because how can you make delicious desserts on a large scale? So, if I had someone in town I would pick-up cinnamon rolls from Lisa Anne’s Bakery in Eastlake. They are legit. Another morning, I would head over to Jeannot’s Patisserie & Bistro in Lafayette for Croissants, they are the best around. The owners are amazing and pride themselves on quality and experience. As for ice cream, you need to head to Denver’s own Little Man Ice Cream. It’s a bit of a drive for me but worth it. (Would somebody PLEASE open an ice cream shop in north Denver???) Lastly, I would show off my friend Stacey Slupik’s flower farm in Niwot, Colorado. It’s called Slupik Mini Farm, and they grow AMAZING flowers!
And of course, go see the mountains! Colorado is so beautiful.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So many people have impacted me. Most of them I can thank regularly. Two people that I have not personally thanked are Erin and Chris Benzakein, owners of Floret Flowers. If you don’t know about them, please look them up. Erin has revolutionized the world of flowers, and her contributions to the floral industry have had a considerable influence on me! I have learned so much from her books, videos and from others she has passed knowledge down to. Girl. You’re amazing. Because of you I have like 50 zinnia plants growing in my yard! I’m obsessed!
