Meet Harrison Levine | Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatrist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Harrison Levine and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Harrison, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
I define success by my patients’ ability to return to their lives — whether after or despite mental health challenges. My purpose as a doctor is to help people, and that kind of service has been the most meaningful work I’ve ever done.
I’m also a chef, musician, and writer, and in each of those roles, my goal is the same: to help people experience more of life, whether that’s through food, music, or words. But as a doctor, I get to do all of that and more — helping patients clear the mental health obstacles that once held them back so they can decide which paths to pursue and fully engage with their dreams.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always been drawn to artists who challenged the status quo—people like Paul Bowles or Jerry Garcia—who were ahead of their time and often only fully appreciated later. I love how history shapes who these artists become, and in the folk music I enjoy, I’m fascinated by how songs build on older ones, carrying forward a shared story. I’ve published about a dozen short stories, and over the past couple of decades I’ve focused on writing professional articles, book chapters, and a book in psychiatry. In my twenties, I played in a couple of improvisational bands, which taught me the joy of creating something new in the moment.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Boulder, and it’s such a beautiful place to share with visitors. We’d probably start with a hike to take in the scenery, then head to Jax Fish House for some of the best seafood in town. I’d want to stop by the Boulder Book Store—it’s such a local treasure—and grab coffee at Boxcar. We’d definitely wander the Bricks to see what’s happening, whether it’s live music, street performers, or just soaking up the energy. And of course, I’d introduce them to some of the incredible local artists whose work I feature in my office.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The most important person in my life was my maternal grandfather, my beloved Poppop. He came to the U.S. from a small shtetl in Belarus and, despite the struggles of a big family, found his way to medical school in Edinburgh—one of the few places Jews could study at the time. He became a doctor, and in my hometown it felt like everyone knew him. I was always so proud of him, but more than that, he taught me countless lessons about life and what matters most—far too many to ever list.
