We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Berry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heather, how do you think about risk?
I believe life is all about taking risk. What do you have to loose? You will never truly never know if something is going to work out unless you try. Taking a risk though, also comes with being able to handle failure. If you are afraid of failure then don’t take the risk. I would rather live my life knowing I have tried everything I have wanted to and failed rather than not trying anything.
My biggest latest risk has been opening up a Yoga Studio in Downtown Greeley. Yoga is not very popular and there is a high risk of failure. This risk has led me down my Current career path for the last two years. If I did not take this risk I would be living the same life. Working a 40hr/week job for someone else. With this risk I do work longer hours but I have more freedom throughout my day and I am able to set my own schedule. Taking this risk has completely changed my life.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own Balanced Movement LLC. a yoga studio in Downtown Greeley. I take pride in our studio being an unconventional yoga studio meaning our studio is accommodating to whoever walks through the doors. Our studio is based on mobility and wellness. When you come to the studio you will find the class laughing, exchanging stories, and creating community. I am excited for the studio to continue to grow and for Greeley to learn about yoga and how it can help you live your everyday life in a more comfortable way.
The biggest challenge of owning a Yoga studio so far has been educating the community on what yoga is and why you should incorporate yoga into your life. Ways we overcoming the misconceptions of yoga is by holding yoga classes outside of the studio. Holding yoga at local breweries, outdoor parks, schools, and corporate offices. Holding Yoga in these spaces allows for people to be more comfortable trying yoga and learning about the myths of Yoga.
There will always be lessons learned but the biggest lesson is not repeating the same mistake twice.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend came to visit during the summer time we would take a bike ride/walk/or rollerblade the Powder River trail. We would enjoy a meal at my favorite restaurant Santeramo’s Pizza House. During the weekend we would enjoy live music from the patio at Brix Brew and Tap house or under the Tent at Weld Werks Brewery. We would enjoy taking our dogs for a walk around the Riverside Pond.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A few books that have helped me along my journey have been The Third Door by Alex Banayan and The leap Of Your Life by Tommy Baker.
When first making the decision to become a Yoga Teacher more full time I was taking a major pay cut. This was weighing heavy on my mind. One evening while vacationing in Huntington Beach I met a stranger in a Sushi restaurant. This gentleman was from Australia he recently quite his very high paying corporate job to travel the world as a happiness researcher. Researching what makes people the most happy and in his research he found Third-World countries were the happiest people in the world. Having only what you need to live and nothing more made people the happiest. This was the final piece of advice I received before taking the risk of becoming a Yoga teacher and eventually owning my own Yoga studio.
My family/friends continue to contribute to my success by encouraging me and giving me space to work hard when needed.
