We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Terry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Heather, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I must admit, I’m a bit of a rebel. It was when I was working in Dubai for a Fortune 500 company that I felt compelled to simply opt out. I was tired of tracking cash flows and profitability as metrics of success. I was interested in people and our purpose in life, not how we were best used for corporate benefit.

Funny enough, I had a life – changing surgery around the same time which lead me to a Chinese Medicine doctor. It was then, during the course of my treatments and the conversations that occurred therein, that I decided to upend the career I had poured myself into for more than decade, and start over — this time with people as my focus, not profits.

At the age of 33 with a three year old daughter in tow, I tucked my 4 years of education in corporate finance into my back pocket and enrolled in a 4 year, year – round Chinese Medicine program. The rest is history. I’ve been practicing Chinese Medicine in the clinic I own, Be Well by MOOV, ever since. I’ve also started another business GetDirtyCo, which sells a pain relieving cream I formulated using Chinese Medicine botanicals to stop pain and speed muscle recovery for people who live with purpose nationwide.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m different from other practitioners and proud to practice the way I do, because of the experiences I’ve had in my life. Working through auto immunity, infertility, divorce, post – surgical pain — they’re all experiences I’ve had personally that have added to my toolbelt as a practitioner and business owner. They allow me to connect with the human in front of me through shared experiences. These challenges have also fueled my desire to complete further education in Functional and Integrative Health as modern – day concerns like endocrine disruption and xenoestrogens were not environmental considerations during the development of Chinese Medicine 3000 years ago.

Has it been easy? Certainly not! How did I overcome challenges? I wish I could say something profound, but the answer is grit. I just couldn’t give up! I had a dream and little girl’s mouth to feed. I do joke that successful businesses owners have to have a little bit of crazy in them to survive this day in age. My inner rebel and irreverence to convention seems to go far in partnering with people who want to build true health, not just patch symptoms. And who knows, maybe it stokes the inner rebel within them such that they live a life that’s fully authentic to them so they live their fullest purpose!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d head to the mountains and hike in the trees. Sleep under the stars. Swim in the blue lakes. They could not opt out of hiking a 14er, nor drinking a beer from a local brewery following the sweaty event. That’s it, really. Colorado is beautiful for its nature; everything else is second to that.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I couldn’t have committed to such an undertaking had my (then) husband, Brandon, not signed up to step in with our daughter during the long days she could not be in school — and for starting the first business with me. I also could not have done it without the love and support of my parents who were always quick to help when time got tight. My first patients were friends, as were my marketing team and advisory board. My daughter Jenssen has become my greatest advocate, my partner Jason is now my largest cheerleader, and his daughters Taylor and Riley my social media queens. Thank you, Meg, for the endless hikes that carried me through the early days. Thank you, Cari for always holding the tissues and the running shoes. Thank you, Cindy for your straight – shooting advice (marketing is hard). And to the sage Dani, your wisdom carried me through. And to Toni, a constant presence between walks. Thank you all. I am a better human because of you.
