We had the good fortune of connecting with Heidi Finn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heidi, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The start of our journey began in the fall of 2009. On the way to meet Michelle Ludt, my business partner, at a coffee shop, I received a text from a friend that JetBlue Airlines announced a killer promotion called “All You Can Jet.” $599 for 45 days of unlimited flights anywhere JetBlue flies. I sat down at the table and read the text out loud. “Want to do it?” She didn’t hesitate. “Hell ya!” “Are you sure? That means taking over a month off of work. I have three houses under contract.” “We’ll figure it out. We always do.” “O.k.” I said, hitting the ‘purchase’ button. The promotion sold out within the hour. *** We often reminisce of the early days, sitting in countless airport lounges asking each other “Where to next?” Blending travel and real estate into a manageable, successful and fulfilling lifestyle is an art. We spent countless sun soaked days on the beaches of Australia, Croatia, Dubai, Rio, Tonga, Europe, Mexico brainstorming how we could better juggle the two. And what we realized is it takes whole lot of support to balance a successful real estate career and life/passions/travel/family. So instead of trying to fit a ‘square peg in a round hole,’ we decided to create a company that could do just that. Our vision started with one simple goal; live an adventurous and fulfilled life. What started as a solution to personal ‘travel woes’ turned into a thriving business and Urban Luxe was born. Over the years we’ve grown and now have three offices – Denver, Breckenridge, Belize (launching Aspen in 2021)- but we’ve managed to keep a few key things in focus: – The people along for the ride (i.e. FAMILY) are the most important – Create your own reality – Never compromise your worth
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
“I came to Denver after a throwing a dart at a map in 2001. I moved here from London, leaving a job with international equity firm to handle Public Relations for NASA’s Cassini-Huygens spacecraft currently orbiting Saturn. I was handling sales for Gulfstream, a private jet manufacturer, when I decided I was sick of a 27 hour commute between Sydney and London offices- I decided to plant some roots, change my career and have been selling Denver real estate ever since!” As seen on HGTV as Denver’s real estate expert on “Bang for Your Buck,” “House Hunters,” and “Rescue Renovation,” and quoted in publications such as the Denver Post, 5280 Magazine, Architectural Digest, MSN, Dwell magazines. My listings are often found in international publications such as Robb Report, WSJ, DuPont Registry. When I’m Not Working… Having lived, worked and traveled to over 130 countries, one of my great passions in life is travel. Experiencing other cultures, meeting new people, seeing the beauty (and sometimes ugliness) of the world has helped me understand that all of our lives are interconnected, yet very individual. I seem to give just as much travel tips as I do real estate advice! My favorite destination? Scuba diving in pods humpback whales in the Kingdom of Tonga. Riding across the Serengeti 150 miles on horseback, coming face to face with a lion. Watching the Northern Lights for the first time as they danced across the Norwegian sky. Peddling through downtown Bogota on a crazy bicycle tour of Columbia. Spending New Years in Dubai, Rio or Sydney. Traveling 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle just to spend a night at the Ice Hotel. Riding down the coast in a motorcycle side-car in Cuba. Catching the Trans Siberian Express from Beijing to St. Petersburg. Just recently taking a month off to drive from the tip of Corsica to the tip of Sardinia with my family. Watching the sunrise solo at Karnak Temple in Egypt… there are just too many ‘favorites’ to list! I am also an enthusiastic scuba diver and PADI DiveMaster. I have over 1000 ocean water dives from all over the world and am a volunteer scuba diver with UNECSO’s Humpback Whale Research Team in Kingdom of Tonga and the Great White Shark project in South Africa. Get certified! The underwater world is such a magical place! I’ve held USHPA handgliding pilot license, love kite and snowboarding, an avid runner, a loving wife and Mom to two Masiffs and a 5yr old little boy obsessed with South America 🙂
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We have more than our fair share of atmosphere, charm, great food, and nightlife. Denver’s restaurant and arts scenes are leading the revival of entire neighborhoods, and quite frankly, hard to keep up with the new array of chef-driven concepts and up-and-coming dining spots. Our city’s most vibrant attraction lies just west of the metropolitan boundary. Where else – we locals ask with pride – might you be skiing, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, hiking, camping- within minutes of leaving your downtown office?! Denver is more than just a city made up of unique neighborhoods; it’s a lifestyle anchored to beautiful sunny skies and year-round outdoor adventures to suit any taste: running, walking, golfing, dining, and shopping. It’s no wonder why Denver is so attractive to people from all over the world — our lifestyle exudes escape, freedom and a beautiful paradise.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We’re company of dreamers, doers, and adventurous souls. Our success is directly attributed to diverse group of people we call FAMILY. Without their many perspectives, ideas, and imaginations we wouldn’t be where we are today.
