We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Larson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I had given birth to my first child a year prior and, like many new mothers, felt like I had lost my identity. I didn’t know who I was or the path I was going down in this new phase of life. As a stay-at-home mom, the desire to help monetarily provide for my family was very present. I knew I did not want to leave my son to go to work and wanted the job to be remote and flexible. I decided to join a direct sales company and needed a business card. As a creative person, I knew I could design a card myself. Posting the design to the immediate sales group and asking for advice before printing, I was overwhelmed with the positive response and requests for help designing marketing items such as business cards. My graphic design studio blossomed out of a community. I wouldn’t have my business without that community of women who supported me and pushed me and my designs forward. Now, I am no longer with that direct sales company and have taken my business full-time two and a half years ago. I have had the honor of designing for clients across the United States and the world. I often think back to those humble beginnings. I am so grateful that a thriving business grew from a simple ask for help into what Jessica Larson Designs is today.
I am a multi-business owner and have recently launched a new business with a close friend called WEST Retreats. WEST, Working Entrepreneurs Succeeding Together, was born from the craving for a community of other self-made businesswomen to connect, share their goals and dreams, their highs and lows, collaborate, embrace, and support another in all phases of our business journeys. Our first 3-day retreat is coming up at the end of July, and we couldn’t be more excited! Suppose you have ever been to a conference. In that case, you can fully relate to the feeling of when it is all over; you are utterly exhausted and have so many ideas but are unsure of what to do with them. All you want to do is go on a mental vacation to try and remember what you just learned. The WEST Retreat is different as it incorporates learning from successful local businesswomen and intentionally breaks up the speaking sessions into digestible chunks by allowing retreat-goers to indulge in wellness services such as massage, facials, hiking, professional headshots, and more. As women, we often fill the cups of those around us, saving ours for last. Creating intentional wellness breaks in between sessions will provide our hard-working businesswomen to relax and reflect on what they learned.
Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I am 100% a self-taught designer. This road has not been easy, with many nights and days studying “YouTube University” videos, tons of practice, and lots of trial and error. I have learned so much in my business life and will continue to learn and grow with my studio. My ability to design quickly and professionally, to listen, and tap into my client’s needs and wants for their designs sets me apart from other studios.
As an entrepreneur, I understand what it feels like to start a business from the ground up. It can feel intimidating, scary, and information overload. Imposter syndrome is a real thing! My goal with my graphic design business and WEST is to alleviate those feelings and empower others in their businesses. I fully believe every company has a story. My goal is to tell that story through unique branding and exceptional design.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc. In your view what are some of the most fun, interesting, exciting people, places or things to check out?
Living in Montrose, Colorado, is the gateway to many fun and unique opportunities! Let’s get a workout at the Montrose Rec Center and follow it up with a refreshing and delicious smoothie from The Root Juice Bar. Afterward, let’s jet to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison for incredible sightseeing and hiking and grab a coffee or tea from San Juan Brews. We can snag a sandwich at Heidi’s Deli for lunch. We stop at SheShe Boutique and Luxe Design Boutique to assemble a cute dinner outfit before heading south. Walking Main Street in Montrose is so much fun. We have many unique businesses that range from restaurants to apparel and gift shops to outdoor stores. There is something here for everyone! No trip to the Western Slope is complete without heading to Ouray for some hot springs time. After soaking all our aches and pains, we indulge in a delicious dinner at The Stone House in Montrose. Our communities slogan is “Stay here. Play everywhere!” That could not be more true!
Alright, so let’s jump right in! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life are at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love, and encouragement of others. So is there a person, group, organization, book, etc., you want to dedicate your shoutout to? Who else deserves a little credit and recognition in your story?
Jessica Larson Designs wouldn’t have been born if not for the support of my husband, family, and the direct sales community I was part of at the time. I am blessed to have so many people in my corner cheering me on.
WEST, Working Entrepreneurs Succeeding Together, wouldn’t have come to fruition if not for my incredible business partner, Danielle, and the support of our families, friends, and local community; thank you!
