We had the good fortune of connecting with Joan Garreffa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joan, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Going from a stay-at-home mom to a full-time fast-paced career in Real Estate made for some major changes in balance for our family! The expectations of teamwork for all family members has been a wonderful gift to all of us. Independence for my sons, some freed up time for myself and a new opportunity to appreciate my husband for picking up the slack have all been positive changes for our family.
I wasn’t blind to the fact that this career was going to shake up our family life tremendously. Through college I worked for very successful Real Estate Brokers in Helena, MT. I was able to witness first hand how they managed their family life and super successful careers–so I knew it could be done!
I am also calm and confident in the flow of this business. I know to work hard during the busy times and enjoy when it slows down for a moment. I think my family is getting there too. They know when it is crazy for mom, we all just need to hold on tight until it slows down a bit, then we can all regroup! One thing that’s certain is they know I am always there for them first and my business comes after.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am currently an Associate Broker with Realty One Group Premier in Denver, CO. I have taken on the role of training new agents to the business and find this very rewarding and challenging!
While obtaining my BA in Business Administration in 3 ½ years, I was a transaction coordinator for one of leading brokerage firms in Montana. My husband and I then moved to Washington State where I sold real estate for two years. ⠀⠀
At this point I became a personal relocation specialist for my young family. We have relocated across this wonderful country 5 times. Each move came with a growing family and its own specific challenges. ⠀⠀
I know how it feels to know no one in a new place and how it feels to drop your kids off at a school where they know no one. I know the angst of waiting for your home to sell and how 3 days on the market can feel like 30. I know how hard it is with kids to keep your home perfect for showings. I know how it feels to wait for your home to be built. I know how it feels to sit at a closing table in five different states. I know how it feels. It can be overwhelming, scary and intimidating. Relocating whether across town or across the country is not easy but I have been through enough scenarios to help answer or alleviate anything that may come up. ⠀⠀
I am confident that through my years of real estate experience, my passion for and longevity in the business with both personal and professional life experiences; I am able to alleviate those feelings for my clients. My job is to create an enjoyable, fun and memorable experience for my customers while we find the best home for them.
I definitely find relocations the most rewarding and fulfilling transactions to manage. There is no greater pleasure than getting a referral from one of the stages of our lives to help their friend relocate to the beautiful state of Colorado! I absolutely love connecting new residents with community leaders to help their transition be as smooth as possible! This is where I feel the most rewarded and confident because of my personal experience.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take them to Stanley Market Place in Aurora first. We would shop at the adorable boutiques while sipping on our favorite cocktail. Then take in a cooking class at Create Cooking School for dinner! The next day we would have a day on the Aurora reservoir paddle boarding and kayaking with picnic lunch! We would have a day at Castlewood Canyon and Garden of the Gods hiking around and enjoying the wonderful Colorado scenery. Next, I would take them for more shopping on Pearl Street in Boulder. Then end our trip at Larimer Square starting with champagne flights at Corridor 44, take in the shops, and finish with a fantastic dinner at the Urban Farmer! These are all my very favorite things to do!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh man, I kind of feel like there are a million little pieces! But in choosing just one, that would definitely have to be my best friend, husband and number one supporter, Nick Garreffa. He has provided a wonderful life for our family on his own for many years and when the time was right, he gave me the gentle nudge I needed to get back into the business. I can go to him for perspective or personnel issues and with his vast knowledge in marketing and managing people, he is always super helpful. He has such a great way of listening and not fixing every problem knowing that what’s meant to be will ultimately be. He encourages me to take risks and knows that when we bet on ourselves, we will be successful. I feel very blessed to have a true partner and teammate in this life!
