Meet Joel Tyson | Commercial Real Estate Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Joel Tyson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joel, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have a bit of a two-fold answer to this question.
The first and most basic was to do it all and see what sticks! When I first started doing photography as a side hustle, my thought was, “I’ll photograph anything!” It’s hard enough to start and build a successful business, why limit myself to a certain niche? So I took every opportunity, studied and practiced hard and built things up. This helped me learn new and different techniques as well as learn what I enjoyed and more importantly, what I did not. Special shout out to all those photogs that work with children and family photos…. they have a grace and patience that I do not.
As I began to build my business and get more consistent cliental. I began to develop my own niche. I began to start working my way out of the areas I do not like and began to focus on the areas I do enjoy. Those being architectural, weddings and senior pictures. Once I learned this, I knew I have to split my brand. Brides don’t want to see houses and Realtors didn’t want to see brides… well at the moment they were visiting my site at least.
So that was when I created Arch Angle Media. It was now the new brand for my most significant and enjoyable form of photography… commercial and residential real estate.
When I created Arch Angle Media, my thought was to be successful in this business, I had to be more than just a photographer. I had to be a media provider I was going to have to learn and offer video, 360, floorplans, virtual tours and whatever would come along next. That is why I called it Arch Angle Media and not Arch Angle Photography. I also chose Arch Angle Media for a name because I wanted to have a name that extended beyond just me as an individual, but something that I could scale in the future with additional photographers if need be.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being a commercial real estate media provide is part creative and part business, but that kinds fits who I am perfectly. Over the years, I have worked hard to constantly develop my skills and service offerings; I am always looking at ways to improve. In fact, I have a video editing podcast playing in the background as I complete this interview. I always want to know now to get better.
I have always operated my business under the mantra of “under commit and over deliver”. I always want to exceed my clients expectations. I work hard to deliver consistent and excellent products and try to do the little things that many overlook. A few minutes to straighten up an area for a photo, a specialty lens for that unique image or extra time editing to get thing just right. I believe that its the little details that set someone apart and I put care and effort into the details. Those are a few of the things I get excited about and am proud to offer my clients.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am probably a fairly simple person that is fortunate enough to live in a fairly spectacular location…. Denver, CO. So when a friend or family visits, its usually a little drive west into the Rocky Mountains. We can check out Red Rocks, even without a concert is pretty awesome. Grab some Beau Jo’s pizza in the mountains. Hit the top of Mt Evans or explore through the Rocky Mountain National Park. Depending on the sports season, Denver is full of professional teams.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
No one ever makes it alone. We all need help along the way and I am no exception. One of my big shout outs would be my cousin Chris Tyson, who is also a full-time photographer. To have someone to walk through all the steps of starting up a business, the ups and downs, the clients, the struggles, the success was invaluable. Someone that can be a sounding board for ideas and a kick in the butt for stupidities. It’s also special that as family, we had the unique perspective to see the journey of each other from the very beginning to now. Love you man!
Another side shout out would be GaryVee. I don’t know him personally, but listening to him over the years has just helped with some perspective, motivation and encouragement. I know that gratitude is his thing so if he every sees this. Thanks Gary!
