We had the good fortune of connecting with Wendy Beltran and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Wendy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I remember that when I started to cook, I only had one mold for pound cakes, I had no idea where to start on what was needed to start baking cakes or how to get organized, I just knew I wanted to do it. My apartment was very tiny and I didn’t have much space to work, I used to mix everything by hand and the buttercream I had to puff with a manual mixer, it was very challenging, exhausting and took way too long, but I was determined to make it work, so I started to save money to buy the tools I thought were needed. I remember that I used the profit from the first wedding cake I made to buy my industrial mixer and even then the order was a complete mess, I wasn’t able to keep the cake in place and it collapsed on the way to the wedding, I had to buy personal cakes to make up for my mistake and I actually spent more money than what I actually made on this transaction, it was a total disaster.
That was one of the hardest moments in my career, it made me really think if I had what it took to be a baker. I remember I got back home and I threw myself in the floor and about to “throw the towel” I bumped into a review one of my first ever customer had written about me, saying –“this cake was one of the best things I have ever had in my life” and for some reason it actually picked me up and made me start to work on an order I had for the following day.
Every time you start something new, there will always be complications, specially if you have no idea what you are doing most of the time, but if you are determined and disciplined you will find the way to reach your goals. It has been almost 5 years and it fells like it was yesterday when I started to make cakes in the tiny kitchen of my apartment… looking back and see how far I have come has made me realize that determination, love for what I do and the will power to move forward after all setbacks is all you need to succeed and if you have that, you have it all!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have always considered myself a very creative person, I like to find “the artistic side” of everything I do, even when I was part of the Corporate Life, I would always look for ways to make my office different or my space of work different so when anybody would see it, they would now it was ME. I would always dress in vibrant colors, it would motivate me to think outside of the box in a very “square” environment like engineering.
I remember that even when I was a little girl, I would like to dress different than other girls, the way I decorated my room and rearrange my bed so I could wake up to a different room every day. I think that part of myself has always help me to come up with different things and stand out from the rest to make my work or anything I do, UNIQUE.
I think that one of the biggest reasons I decided to become a baker is because it gave me the opportunity to combine the 2 things I enjoy the most, the kitchen and artistic designed.
To make something that looks like a piece of art and people can appreciate it and on top of it, be able to eat it and taste delicious, is one of my biggest satisfactions in life. The process of evolution hasn’t been easy… I had to let go of a lot of stigmas of being “successful” in your career, and in Mexico, artists do not get the recognition they deserve.
There are a lot of judgments about making “art or designed” part of your career and often hear “if you do that in life, you wont even be able to feed yourself”, is better if you go to school and become a doctor or lawyer. That is why I took the decision to become a baker after working 8 years as a HR Manager for a top 500 company making the riskiest move in my life but then again, the most fulfilling ones I have ever made.
To summarize all of these, I would love to motivate anybody to persue your dreams, no matter your age, social status, or even if you doubt yourself, nothing is impossible and if you really are passionate about what you do, discipline and self-education is a must, those 2 things have help me succeed and explote my talents so people can recognize my work, style and originality.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
boulder, downtown, evento de food trucks and try different things. take them to union station, probably machete i like boulder and will take them to the froyo in boulder to eat sushi, quality italian

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes out to all my Friends, the ones that were there for me, supported me every step of the way and believed in me even when I didnt do it! I think is very important to be around people who help you grow in a positive enviroment, specially when you are at the beginning and more tan just criticizing your decitions, give you constructive critisism that will help you and your business grow.
The people that gets genuinely happy for your succes, that recomend your business to their circle and brag about your succes like it was their own..

I will never forget all my Friends who were helping me every step of the way, baking, decorating, washing dishes and coming along for deliveries, the ones that were there late nights and early mornings finishing up some orders, the ones that were there the “Opening day” supporting me and buying EVERYTHING IN STOCK and continuosly coming back to buy my cakes.
Thanks to every single one of them I felt the courage to continue everyday on my dream.
A special thank you to my partner because without his constant Support I would not be doing what I love to do.
