We had the good fortune of connecting with John Roberts and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi John, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson was learning that the people involved with the business were the greatest asset, and choosing individuals who are motivated from their hearts about what they do. Furthermore, it has been a great lesson to learn from others who I may not agree with or interact smoothly with yet still share Sunflower Farm as the core basis for health and growth.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Sunflower Farm is an educational demonstration farm, located in rural Southwest Longmont.  It is a 55 acre working farm, that offers a licensed Preschool, School-Aged Program, Summer Camps, public Farmfest days and Summer Music on Wednesday evenings, supporting local bands and food trucks. I am most proud of the nearly 20 incredible Staff members at Sunflower Farm who take such pride and heartfelt devotion to the children and parents. Sunflower Farm provides a place for the community to come and interact with nature, animals, family members, and others one may meet while spending quality time with their loved ones.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Denver Art Museum followed with a Beer at a local pub with conversation and a good food truck or two would encompass the first couple of days followed with an art project at the farm with a hike or two thrown in there somewhere.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Without doubt, my ex-wife, Bren Frisch, would be the person who partnered with me to create Sunflower Farm. Although raising a family and bringing forth Sunflower Farm from its infancy required many sleepless nights, Sunflower Farm became an area where we could give back to the community and also heal ourselves through personal changes. That personal growth made me realize that the most important business lesson was understanding that the relationships within and without the business is just as important as “the business” for without those folks, the business would not exist.
