We had the good fortune of connecting with John Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi John, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I love gardening and growing my own food. We are inundated with chemicals everywhere. So we created an all-natural, organic super clean grow media and soilless potting soil. We specialize in indoor blends but we also created two outdoor blends. There are lots of “organic” potting soils but we wanted to create the cleanest, most sustainable product on the market that also works, and we think we did.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Pioneers Harvest was created out of a need we saw in the home growing and commercial growing operations. People want clean, affordable, healthy, easy to use, highly effective grow medias whether it’s for their home or their million dollar growing operation. We think we exceed that need and the yield results proves a product can be sustainable and highly effective.

Hiring the right people is crucial. We take our responsibility as employers very seriously. We want to make sure our employees are taken care of and in turn we hope they will take care of the business.

Starting a new business is wildly difficult and chaotic. There were times in the beginning we didn’t think we were going to make it, but we powered through, built processes, got buy-in, and have been growing ever since. We still have a long way to go, and many new lessons to learn. We try to look at growing pains with gratitude. Faith and gratitude are not just platitudes, they are foundational attitudes and mindsets we strive to keep at the forefront of our growth.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We are about an hour from Ouray. Most of our staff likes to hit up the hot springs and then swing into Maggie’s for a burger.

A great outdoor adventure is driving up to the Mesa outside Grand Junction. There are lots of places to hike, swim, fish, and Anderson’s Lodge has a delicious Polish menu.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Huge shout out to all our staff and cofounders! We could not do this as well as we do if everyone wasn’t passionate about our vision and purpose. Also, a huge thank you to my wife Sara and my family for supporting and going on this wild ride.
