We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Godard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julie, what principle do you value most?
The principle of living in harmony with nature inspires me everyday. We can learn so much of ourselves when we take time to sit in nature and observe. Harmony with nature reflects the understanding that humans are not separate from the natural world, but very much interconnected. Creating products from nature allows me to share the wonders of the natural world with others. I hope it inspires people to take time to grow something themselves or, at the very least, to observe what’s growing around them and recognize the interactions we have with nature every day—if we’re paying attention.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Purple Fence Farm was born in 2020, from over 20 years of formulating experience in natural body care, and a piece of raw land with the idea of cultivating a lavender farm.
We pour intention into everything we do. Whether its crafting a new product or pulling weeds at the farm. More than just a blend of ingredients, each product is a carefully crafted story that embodies the essence and spirit of Nature and Colorado.
What sets us apart in the world of skincare and culinary creations is our commitment to the continuous research of quality, ethically grown and harvested ingredients, and simplicity. Every step, from planting our lavender fields to handcrafting each balm and blend, is driven by a passion for sharing the gifts and healing of nature with others.
We prioritize all-natural ingredients and sustainable packaging, aiming to provide products that are not only effective and indulgent but also gentle on the planet.
Everyday brings a new challenge in growing a business, as well as questions like “What was I thinking?” or “How are we going to make that work?”, but with each new challenge usually has a gem hidden within it! Over the past two years, supply chain disruptions and rising costs of ingredients have presented significant challenges, but our commitment to ensuring our customers are well taken care of remains unwavering. We continue to work hard to provide the high-quality products you love, without compromising.
Years ago, I heard about a company that wouldn’t make products when they were in a bad mood, believing that energy would infuse into their creations. I’ve embraced that philosophy in my own work. If something throws me off or puts me in a negative space, I take time to reconnect with nature, reset, and then return to work with a clear and positive mindset. It doesn’t take much to step away from the project for a few minutes, reset and come back. In the end everyone is the better for it!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Road trip!! Red rocks of course would be on the itinerary. Of course I would take them on some of my favorite hiking trails, Lake Isabelle, blue lakes, etc in the Brainard lake rec area maybe lunch at Katmandu in Nederland. One day enjoy a tour at Fat Tire brewing and maybe some shops around FoCo. Eat at Music City for amazing hot chicken and sweet potato fries. Then head south driving 285 to Salida, Buena Vista area, spend a night there. Maybe venture to the sand dunes, hitting a couple of hot springs along the way. Making a circle around through Gunnison, Paonia, Marble and back to Denver. If we hit a Summer Sunday morning we would absolutely go to the South Pearl Street Farmers market to the vendor “New Friends” for the best breakfast sandwich I’ve ever had!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have so much gratitude for my friends that have stood next to me through the years. Even the many times when they didn’t understand what I was creating, or thought I was a little crazy! Yet they still offered to help make product or go on a hike to harvest herbs; listening to my rambling on about the plants! My “soap guru” Laurie, to whom I owe many years of advice, help, and generosity. And the many awesome customers and those yet to have found us! Honestly everyone along this journey is, and has been a part of what we’re crafting.
