We had the good fortune of connecting with Kathleen Cole and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kathleen, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My process was quite simple. I realized the need for more wedding planner professionals in our destination town. There are so many different types of clients and there weren’t enough local planners in our town. At first, I only planned weddings part time but recently went full time as I really enjoy the work and the time spent getting to know my clients and bringing their vision to life.
What should our readers know about your business?
I love wedding planning and the region I get to do it in… Telluride! Being in Telluride and getting to work with clients that truly believe in its magic is the BEST! My path began in Telluride in the music business industry putting on music festivals and promoting concerts, then special events for non-profits and for-profits, followed by wedding planning. I always loved music and non-profit events but you work a lot of grueling hours and the pay isn’t that great. My heart was in event planning and all that hard work is why I’m able to own my own wedding planning business today. Wedding planning has its challenges of course but when you’ve worked as many events in one area as I have, you’re able to professionally and calmly focus and troubleshoot on what arrises with the many resources that I’ve partnered with through the years. What others may think of as moving heaven and earth really is sometimes just a phone call away when you have a team that has your back.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Since I’m an outdoors girl, I’d most likely take them on a hike to the many wonderful spots nearby… Blue Lakes for a shorter hike or Columbine lake for a more challenging one! I’d definitely entertain the idea to come to Telluride during one of our music festivals whether it was Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Telluride Jazz Festival or Telluride Blues and Brews Festival. I’d take them out for tapas at Sidework, french cuisine at La Marmotte and a lovely brunch at 221 South Oak. For lighter fare, I might suggest La Cocina de Luz or the Butcher and the Baker.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to give a shout out to my fiance. He has been very supportive of me as I go full time in my career. We both are self employed and it’s nice to have a companion that believes in you and your goals. I am so proud of him and what he has accomplished in his photography business. It’s great to be there for one another through the ups and downs in our careers. We are very good at making time for one another and enjoying the things that we love in life… mainly hiking/camping, traveling, and being with our dogs, Frank and Izzy.
