We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Craig and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katie, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
The most important decision that contributed to my success was the decision I made to complete my Masters degree.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own a retail business that was previously owned by my mother, High Country Leathers. I came to own the shop because I was looking for a way to support myself financially and be able to stay in Ouray. I got here with the support of my family, lots of schooling and the ability to be open minded when I was presented with opportunities for my future. Was it easy, definitely not – and it still isn’t; every day is a learning curve. I’ve learned that the best way to overcome challenges is to ASK FOR HELP. There are so many people with so many different skill sets or connections, it is so important to utilize that! I’ve learned that taking a big risk and doing something outside of your comfort zone is scary and that you will mess up, but you learn so much along the way!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them jeeping to see the wildflowers. I’d take them hiking up Ild Horse-thief trail and take them to the park to enjoy the free music on Thursdays. I’d have them eat at the Brickhouse 747 and enjoy a cocktail on the roof at Cousin Jack’s.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Who deserves credit – that’s a looonngg list My mom and step-father have been a huge part of my success. Without them, there’s no way I would be where I am now.

My significant other for supporting me in helping in any way he can… at home, at the shop, at the hotels. You name it, he’s there if I need.

My friends have helped keep me sane. They’ve been my shoulder to lean on, my go-to for resources, my fun, and a significant part of reminding me to create a better work/life balance.
