We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Gatti Tassin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katie, do you have a budget? How do you make lifestyle and spending decisions?
Absolutely! I believe in personal finance transparency when it comes to spending, investing, etc. because how else are we supposed to learn if we aren’t talking about it as openly as we talk about the other important things in our lives?

I like to start with the end in mind and build backward. For me, that means clarifying when I’d like to become work-optional (and how much money I want to have by then to make it happen). Then, I can look at my income and my spending and determine how much margin needs to be created (and invested!) every month such that that’s an attainable goal.

Right now, my husband and I have combined finances, which means our paychecks go into one joint checking account and then auto-pay our credit cards and other bills. We spend anywhere between $8,000 and $10,000 per month, on average.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Money with Katie is a personal finance brand that encompasses a blog, podcast, social media presence, and suite of tools and products — and I think it stands out because it’s a thoughtful, entertaining approach to a topic that tends to be nap-inducing.

I started Money with Katie in 2020 and today, 3 years later, it’s a million-dollar business. Frankly, I’m not sure how we got here — the only things I can point to with confidence are undeniable, unrelenting passion for the work, consistency, and a lot of luck.

It’s pushed me to grow and meet myself in new ways, and it’s opened doors for me that I had previously only dreamed of knocking on, like reaching hundreds of thousands of women, writing a book, getting acquired, and ultimately, having a shot at financial freedom of my own.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Fort Collins — about an hour north of Denver — and my favorite spots are O’Dell’s, Lima Coffee, White Tree Sushi, and Chopstickers. I also love taking my dog to City Park and the Poudre River Trail.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Dedicated to my husband Thomas and a few of my dearest friends, Ellie, Ella, McCall, and Kristy—who make me feel like I can do anything.
