We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly James and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Happiness. What an all encompassing word.
The little moments make me happy. A home cooked meal shared with family on the acreage where I grew up. Simple moments enjoying warm coffee snuggled against my French Bulldog. Feeling the rising morning sun on my face. A sparkling clean kitchen, fresh with lemon scent. These little moments seem small, but enjoying these moments, and soaking them in through out the day, turns them into the big things, the important things.
Most of all what makes me happy is freedom, not at all a little thing. The freedom to take the long weekend to visit my family to share that meal on the acreage where I grew up. The freedom to enjoy my morning, the smell of my coffee, the warmth of the cup in my hand, my bulldog swirled into a cinnamon roll against my leg, the rising sun greeting me as I start my day slowly, on my terms. The freedom to take care of myself and my home, and most importantly allowing myself the time to do so.
Owning my own business, though a busy and sometimes tiring endeavor, has allowed me the freedom to enjoy life the way I want to, by alloting the time on my own terms to soak in those small moments that wind together to make life an absolute dream worth living.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was scrolling through degree programs during the beginning of my sophomore year of my journalism degree. I felt bored and stuck, dreading my upcoming media exam. Scrolling…scrolling… I stumbled upon a floral design program, and felt a fire light inside of me. I immediately un-enrolled for all of my journalism courses and got on a waitlist for the floral design program. 8 years later, and here we are.
A Colorado Native, I am drawn to the natural beauty of the mountains, flowers, and botanics our state has to offer. What a gift to work and live amongst such beauty. Art is my passion, my vice, my daily dose of dopamine. I feel so honored to blend an art form with a natural product to create timeless beauty. I love immersing myself in design and color to bring my clients joy during such a memorable time of their lives.
Though I was raised in the horticulture industry, my Dad an arborist, and my Mom, a seed sower at a green house, professionally I have been in the floral industry for 8 years, and feel like I’ve only just begun. I’ve seen trends come and go, new floral and foliage varieties be developed, supported my peers in the industry as they have me, and grown exponentially from both a design and business stand point. I am excited for what the future holds, and to learn and grow more and more.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Anytime anyone visits me here in NOCO, the first place I take them is RMNP for a drive up trail ridge road. Many a time I have had to pull over to let my sea level living friends adjust to the altitude, nothing an alcoholic beverage and bison burger in Estes can’t fix.
I have a hidden spot up the Poudre river canyon, the rocks are flat and comfortable for sitting, the sun hits just right, twinkling above the canopy of trees, and the sound of the ever so powerful river rages, washing away my inner thoughts, immersing myself in my surroundings. This. This is why I have never moved from CO, and never plan to. If I have invited you to this spot, just know……you’re part of the tribe, and I love you.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
He believed in my when I didn’t believe in myself.
He told me I could do it when I said I couldn’t.
He told me to get out of my head where the toxic whirlpool of disbelieving thoughts resided.
He simply said, ” **** it,” if I didn’t make money for a year.
He trusted that I wouldn’t let him or myself down.
He told me I would book out in the first 3 months of business, which I did.
He knew I was capable.
Everyone deserves someone like Wes on their side, thank you for trusting me with my dream and knowing I could bring it to fruition.
