We had the good fortune of connecting with Khia Glover and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Khia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
It really has been this ever evolving chain of events. I knew from a very young age that I would work for myself, not sure how I knew, but the desire was always there, I just didn’t know what it would look like at the time. I can remember being really young and hearing about how women and children in other countries were being treated and saying to myself that one day I would do something about that. Starting Notes by Khia specifically, I saw the need for more mental health education in minority communities, particularly the Black community. I am also a Licensed Social Worker and there is still this idea that because it is a helping profession we should not expect to make a lot of money, that we should be okay with helping others while we struggle and that’s just not okay so I found my own way. I started coaching because in therapy the insurance companies really run the game and force therapists into giving more heavy diagnoses than needed, only allowing us to help our clients in certain ways, restricting how often we can see them and for how long – they don’t consider the needs of the clients at all, so by starting my own business I can really offer my clients the support that they truly need in a way that benefits them the most.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Notes by Khia is unique because I have taken my professional knowledge as a mental health professional, my adverse childhood experiences, and my current mental health struggles and use that to pour into my clients. My experiences help me to connect better to my clients, showing them that they are not alone in their struggles. I am most excited for the opportunity to be a voice for even more children who are hurting and feeling unheard and watching their lives change after they participated in my programs with their parents.

Getting where I am today has not been easy at all. I have learned that owning a business really illuminates a lot of your deepest fears, traumas, and so much more. I did not expect all of the childhood traumas and stressors that growing a business would bring up for me. I have had to fight hard to move past the mindset blocks that had been ingrained in me for so many years. I continue to overcome obstacles by going to therapy, working through my fears rather than letting them stop me, reading more books, and surrounding myself with amazing people that cheer me on and ignoring those that try to discourage me (even when that person is myself). It is up to me to really make this successful and I believe that all of the long nights, the tears, the disappointments will one day be things I look back at and smile and tell myself how proud I am that I didn’t stop.

What I hope that the world will see through my story is that you cannot control many of the things that happen to you in life but you can control how you shift that to make something beautiful. I don’t like that I had certain experiences as a child but because I did I am able to stand in the gap for other children and help change their world for the better. It doesn’t have to be bad forever.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am definitely a home body so this is a little bit of a tough one for me 😅 but…we would definitely have some delicious, greasy food while enjoying live music at ICE Event Center, grab drinks at the Daiquiri Lounge and/or Kindred Spirits, and Sunday brunch at Syrup. The Parlor is a place I love to eat that has several different options for us to choose from. We would ride the scooters through bricktown and stop at Capitols for ice cream. Pizza is my favorite food so we would definitely enjoy pizza at Pizza23. And of course there has to be a fancy dinner so dinner at Vast at the top of the Devon Tower is a must! Bowling, laser tag, and other games at Main Event is on the list for sure!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not have gotten where I am without the people who are there on those lonely days and nights where I am ready to throw it all away and that is my two best friends in the entire world, Cedric and Shanta, and my little sister, Kalyn. They let me cry then remind me of my purpose and that is invaluable.
