We had the good fortune of connecting with Lex Trexler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lex, what is the most important factor behind your success?
If I’m being honest the most important factor in my brand’s success has been resilience and following a path that wasn’t encouraged by others. I built this business from a place of wanting to prove—to myself most of all—that I could create the life I envisioned. That drive continues to push me forward every day. It’s shaped the way I’m able to provide a safe space for my clients, and I wouldn’t be where I’m at today, without their support.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When a client comes to me and sits in my chair, it’s a space for them to be heard. This goes for hair, and anything personal that may be weighing on them. Sometimes you’re sitting in my chair for hours, and when you come in multiple times a year, those are relationships that are being built. Perspectives being shared, all while you’re trusting me to enhance your beauty, and help you love what you see in your hair. While my journey has been difficult, and I wouldn’t wish it for anyone else, I wouldn’t trade it. It’s ironic in the grand scheme of things when you wish things would be easier, or “what ifs” but my journey has shaped me and my business into what I’ve built today. When I had told my father I wanted to do cosmetology within a votec program through school, and one day maybe own a salon myself, I was met with a disapproving response. Growing up my birth mother was mostly absent, especially in my young years. My father in leas words, isn’t a good, nor nice person. When I was 22 my father laid hands on me for the last time and I never looked back. That was the hardest, yet best thing for me. I didn’t have anything holding me back anymore. After another failed job, and the support of my partner I finally went to cosmetology school, 7 years later. Now, 2 years later, I have the most amazing clients who support me, and that list continues to grow. This industry can be hard, but I’ve learned through all my experiences, not to give up. I’m beyond proud of myself for choosing this path and genuinely pouring my heart into every aspect of being successful and making woman feel beautiful, and empowered. Trust yourself, and you’re going to end up exactly where you’re supposed to be. I’m becoming the version of myself that the little version of me always wanted to be. It’s not going to be easy, but it’s going to be worth it. Everything you do today, matter tomorrow, and I will continue growing and will never give up. I hope to be someone my siblings one day, look up to and can break free from their shackles. As well as anyone else who may feel stuck, unsupported, or held back. You can absolutely do all the things anyone says you can’t.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I absolutely love taking a quick trip into the mountains. After all, they’re in our backyard! Any body of water that has a Mountain View is a must! Paddle boarding is one of my favorite things to do! Along with visiting cochino taco for happy hour! I love bowling and mini golf, so we would definitely be going to lucky strike, and adventure golf! Of course they’d come to the salon for a refresh or just a blowout! Growing up I didn’t live near an in n out so that’s a must!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would absolutely have to thank my partner for supporting me, and encouraging me to follow this journey beyond words. For a brief period of time I had an instructor in cosmo school, and we called her “Steph.” She was very close to my age, and even though she was there a short time in my program, she made the biggest impact. She made it easy to talk to her, share my story, and that made all the difference. I also watched her grow, and heard her words of advice, and guidance when it came to hair and life. I’m so thankful to have had time to look to her for guidance in this industry. Lastly, the owner of the salon “The Beauty Lab” that I have a booth at Christina, has given me the greatest opportunity to grow my business and is an amazing mentor to have in my corner. I’m so blessed to have ended up where I am.
