We had the good fortune of connecting with Lid Dixon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lid, what are you inspired by?
I find inspiration in the journeys and stories of other people.  NPR’s “How I Built This” podcast is one of my favorite sources of these stories. I also love reading biographies of musicians.  I have a nice collection of music biography books!

Interesting. How do you think inspiration from these stories or journeys has influenced your path in life?
You know, I have wondered the same thing before. I guess these stories inspire me to be true to my interests and values — to accept where I find joy and nurture my interest in creative endeavors. I love the mental high from creating something, like a writing a song.    One of the most satisfying things in life for me is to be inspired and the result is a song.  I’m a poet at heart — a poet that prefers to have music in the background. I guess that’s really a songwriter. My songs are very much driven by the lyrics.

So what is professional life like for a songwriter — specifically you?
Well, the songwriting is really a small part of it but that’s where it starts.  I’m not the kind of songwriter that writes hundreds of songs a year for a music publisher.  For me, the songs go from the pen to the stage and the studio.  So, I’m also a booking agent, an artist manager, a studio musician, a music marketer, a social media promoter, a website designer, a video producer, and a merchandiser, among other things.  It can seem like a lot at times.
I tried to quit music several years ago, but I relapsed! My brain is always working on songs and eventually they have to come out. Plus, since moving to NoCo in 2021 I have found the music community to be very inspiring.  It has led to the release of two records in two years.  And, I’m happy to be recording new music and playing live for people. As well as just attending shows by other musicians I’m lucky to have befriended.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We usually we do a little brewery tour and grab lunch or brunch at the Mishawaka. We would likely pay a visit to the Sunset Lounge in the Elizabeth Hotel after a nice dinner at Ginger & Baker, or at Taqueria Los Comales. Catch some live music at one of the many venues in Fort Collins and the surrounding area.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Having the freedom to be creative takes more for me than some I’d guess. There have definitely been times in my life where I felt limited. Shoutout to the music community in Northern Colorado, and my wife and family for their support.
